It’s all but official that Delta Air Lines is introducing a new, ultra-premium cobranded credit card (with an annual fee to match).
But what will it be called?
Delta and American Express currently offer seven co-branded cards:
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card
Platinum and Gold are also tiers in the SkyMiles Medallion elite status program. Diamond is the highest, followed by Platinum, Gold, and Silver at the bottom. There’s also Delta 360º status for the big Delta airfare and Delta Amex spenders. The invitation criteria for 360º status aren’t necessarily known. Although, Delta flyers who accrue at least 5 million miles flown enjoy annual (really, lifetime) 360º status. That’s one way.
René deLambert and I got to talking about what name Delta and Amex might give this jazzy (and spendy) new card. To be clear, this is just us chatting. It’s not based on anything we’ve heard.

They could keep with the (confusing?) Gold and Platinum overlap between the SkyMiles and Amex worlds. The natural progression would make this the “Delta SkyMiles® Diamond American Express Card.” That not only sounds pretty cool but instantly provides a positive, bougie mental image: sleek, elegant, sparkly, blue. Everyone knows what diamonds (the jewels, not the SkyMiles Medallions) look like.
How about the “Delta One SkyMiles® American Express Card”? Delta One is already a Delta product. A Delta One Amex puts the product more front and center in people’s minds.
Another idea is the “Delta SkyMiles® 360º American Express Card.” That stands out from the other cards, namely because its differentiator is a number (360º) instead of a word (“Reserve,” “Platinum,” etc.). Plus, “360º” hints at an all-encompassing card packed with great benefits every Delta flyer could want.

Saying “the Delta 360 Amex” is more exciting than the “Delta One Amex” and “the Delta Diamond Amex.” Colors, metals, and jewels have been done to death by every credit card company. On the same token, a 360º card darn well better go a long way toward getting you actual 360º status. (Although, what do the “Reserve” cards get you? Reserve status that doesn’t exist?) A Delta Diamond Amex could boast bigger MQD Headstarts than its Platinum and Reserve counterparts. (At least $5,000 MQD or more?) A Delta One Amex should include a significant discount or perk for Delta One seats. Maybe a Delta One Companion Certificate without fare class restrictions.
Delta might use another term completely unrelated to their current brand or products. (the “Ultra SkyMiles Card”!) But those are the three that jump out at us. Really going out on a limb, I know.

Delta Sky Miles diamond would be perfect because if you use any of the other names, it would have to come With some type of status related to the numbers, and if you Named it with the name diamond it could come with Gold Medallion status and then everything else the reserve comes with
The D1 Card or D1 Card or D1 AmeEx
Online, in the explanation of benefits and choices, they are now referring to our “basic Delta SkyMiles Reserve” and “basic Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business” AMEX cards. I told my husband the word, “basic” has been slipped in there to prepare for the next level up!

None of the lower tier SkyMiles card permit SkyClub access, would this new higher card now knock out the Reserve Card for SkyClub access? I certainly hope not.
I think there would be a mutiny if it did.
