If you missed out on the American Express® Green Card‘s great welcome promotion, here’s the what the card is offering now.New card members may earn 40,000 bonus Membership Rewards® Points after spending $3,000 on eligible purchases within six (6) months of being approved for card membership. (All information about the American Express® Green Card has been independently collected by Eye of the Flyer. It has not been reviewed by the issuer.)
The American Express® Green Card is an interesting card. I love its 3X on dining, travel, and transit (Amex calls it “Travel and Taste.” Cute, right?)
- Travel
- Including flights, hotels, vacation rentals, and more.
- Transit
- Including trains, buses, ferries, subways, and more.
- Dining at restaurants
- Worldwide, including takeout and delivery in the US.
The card carries a $150 annual fee. We value Membership Rewards points at about 1.8 cents each (we’re slightly more conservative than others), so the 60,000 bonus points alone is worth about $1,018 in travel rewards. The welcome bonus easily covers that annual fee for several years.
Plus, the card has an annual $199 statement credit toward CLEAR Plus membership. Is CLEAR worth it? Like most things, that’s subjective. CLEAR saved me from missing at least one flight (looking at you, Baltimore TSA).
Finally, you can take advantage of an annual $100 Lounge Buddy statement credit to get you into eligible airport clubs. (But if it’s lounge access you crave, check out this write up comparing the Green to some other cards.)
Dining-wise you can do better with the American Express® Gold Card — which has better statement credit opportunities (at least, we think so). But that has a $250 annual fee and the statement credits require jumping through some hoops that might be bothersome to some.
However, as someone who someone who likes Membership Rewards points, the 3X on travel and transit practically makes this a slam-dunk.
