Hot off the presses, here’s some interesting news. We’re throwing it back to early 2020, folks: meals are coming back to first class on some Delta Air Lines flights.
And I don’t mean the glorified snacks we’ve been served for the past year or so. We’re talking about hot meals. (Maybe you’ll be served canned wine, who knows.)
Zack Griff at TPG reports Delta will gradually reintroduce hot grub starting March 1. He says it’ll take about a week for everything to be deployed across the system. So if you’re not noshing on the Delta cheeseburger during, say, a March 6 flight, that doesn’t necessarily mean anything’s “broken” or screwed up.
Delta One passengers on some transcons have enjoyed hot meals for a while. For example, I savored the meatballs during an LAX to JFK flight this past September.
Do be aware that Delta hot meals are served only on flights traveling at least 900 miles, as well as hops between to/from Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. For anything under 900 miles, Delta says you’ll receive “savory and healthy snacks.” (Heck, René and his BRU Boys received a small lunch during their 30-minute KLM flight!)
Still, though, this is a welcome (re)addition.

Considering Delta’s move toward bamboo silverware, canned wine, and mini-cans of Coke, I don’t think we are going to get the hot meals of 2015-2018, when Delta’s catering was legitimately good. By late 2018 and early 2019, the meals were downright bad. The only saving grace was pre-select as then you could at least know whether you should eat at the airport before boarding.
