I’m admittedly a little late to the party on this news. But Delta Air Lines now allows Medallion status holders to manually redeem their Choice Benefits Upgrade Certificates online!
Many of us longed for this feature. (Whenever Delta sent me surveys about my “Delta experience,” I always wrote “allow to apply Upgrade Certificates ourselves” in the “What can we do better?” sections.)
In the past, our only option was to call the Medallion hotline and ask a phone rep to apply the certificates. That process could take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, depending on hold times and the rep’s knowledge.
But that’s a thing of the past.
EotF reader Larry kindly sent me this screenshot of a reservation during which he applied Upgrade Certificates. (I’m out of Upgrade Certificates, so I couldn’t do it myself. Thanks, Larry!)
Have you used this feature yet? What’s been your experience?

Be careful with this…. This is a good step in the right direction for sure but it’s not ready just yet. It sometimes applies GUCs rather than RUCs for domestic flights if you have them both available in your profile.
Also, unless something has changed in the past couple days, when using GUC you can’t specify which segment it is used on if there is a connection. It’s a gamble.
I am also wondering if it’s applying the certificate automatically or just notifying Delta that the certificate needs to be applied by someone manually.
Also on the topic of connecting itineraries, it isn’t able to pull availability correctly (e.g., if search SFO-SLC-AMS and it will tell you that there it is not available, but you search each segment there is availability and a phone agent can apply the certificate for you on both segments).
I have used it for 4 upcoming trips in January and it has worked perfectly each time. There were no connections but I used both RUCs and GUCs and they were applied correctly. Major improvement!
Just making sure – I see that there is a separate request (check box) for comfort plus and first class upgrade requests. As a Diamond medallion I always automatically get upgraded to comfort plus. If I request to apply an upgrade certificate does that mean it will be used to get me from main cabin to comfort plus which is NOT what I want since I’m getting that anyway?
Because the UC is being applied toward First Class, you should be fine. (Then again, Delta IT has been known to go sideways…)
