If you hold the Chase Freedom Flex card, you can now activate the 5% bonus cashback categories for October through December!
(The same applies for cardholders of the legacy Chase Freedom, which is no longer available for applications).
What are the Chase Freedom Flex’s Bonus Categories for Q4?
PayPal and Walmart purchases are the big stars this upcoming quarter.
You’ll earn 5% cashback (awarded as 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards) on purchases made through those merchants from October 1 – December 31, 2021. A maximum of $1500 in combined spending (or 7500 Ultimate Rewards points) applies. Enrollment is open through December 14.
Cardholders must manually enroll in the promotion — it doesn’t automatically add itself to your card. So how do you do that?
How to Activate the Q4 Chase Freedom Flex Bonus Categories
There are a couple of super simple ways to opt-in to the Q4 bonus promotion.
The first is to visit ChaseBonus.com. Plug in your last name, the last four digits of your Flex card’s number, and your zip code.
The second way is to log in to your Chase profile. Then scroll down to your Chase Freedom Flex’s account summary.
Press “Activate Now,” and you’re good to go.
My Thoughts on the Q4 Chase Freedom Flex Bonus Categories
PayPal and Walmart were last year’s Q4 bonus categories. I’m glad to see them back in 2021.
Keep in mind that PayPal Digital Gifts purchases usually qualify for the 5% bonus. So that’s another easy way to use the benefit.
Worth noting: Payments made through the Xoom transfer service are not eligible for the promotion. Plus, Chase says Friends and Family or Person-to-Person (P2P) transactions “may be prohibited or not eligible for 5%.”
Walmart is a good option for everyday essentials, groceries, and fall holiday supplies. If you like decorating for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah, New Year, etc., this could help you save a few bucks.
Plus, there are plenty of inclusions as to where the 5% may be used:
- Walmart Discount Stores
- Walmart SuperCenters
- Walmart Neighborhood Markets
- Walmart branded gas stations operated by Walmart
- any other Walmart branded retail stores operated by Walmart
- purchases made with Walmart Pay
Purchases made at third-party stores located inside Walmarts are not eligible to receive the bonus. For example, most Walmarts I’ve visited have a McDonald’s. Buying your Big Mac meal wouldn’t qualify. (But you’d still get 3% back for the dining purchase). Also worth noting, Chase tells us that “affiliate businesses such as Sam’s Club and local delivery merchants such as Shipt” are excluded.
I’m glad to see PayPal and Walmart back as bonus categories. I regularly use these merchants — especially PayPal — so it’s an easy way to save a bunch of money.
