Hot on the heels of our LAX to Barcelona Delta mileage-status run, we found another trip — going in the opposite direction!
This is an LAX to Auckland (AKL) trip departing on Christmas Night, Monday, December 25. You leave at 10:55 PM. That gives you plenty of time to celebrate with your family and pull a “Sorry, I’d love to stay longer, but I have to go to New Zealand, ‘kay, byeeeee!” Or you can position to LAX if you don’t live in the Los Angeles area.
Keep in mind that is officially the final week to ever again earn MQM. (Gets you in the feels, doesn’t it?)
Plus, the weather should be fairly mild for you folks wanting to escape the snow and cold.
You get into Auckland on Wednesday at 8:55 AM. You have the rest of that day and all day Thursday to play in the City of Sails.
You fly back on Friday at 2:50 PM and arrive in Los Angeles “before you left that day” — 6:00 AM. The early morning arrival is perfect if you want to travel elsewhere (i.e., position home, etc.)
The trip currently costs $884.10. Delta says it’ll yield 13,008 MQM (and $750 MQD). That’s an MQM return of about 6.8 MQM
Yes, this is another Main Cabin run. But again:
- You sometimes have to suffer for your status
- Platinums and Diamonds can upgrade to Comfort+ shortly after booking
- Diamonds can try to use their Global Upgrade Certificates and get into Delta One
We’re Enabling You to Go to New Zealand!
This itinerary isn’t necessarily ideal for most people and the MQM earnings are OK — but not stellar.
Remember that rollover MQM convert 10:1 to MQD next year. That makes this trip potentially worth $1,301 in MQD next year.
But if you’re looking for an excuse to get away (from your family) for a few days and go someplace warm, this could be fate.
“What is it with you and these coach trips? And why LAX?”
I’ve plugged multiple departure cities into my searches and LAX is the big winner. What can I tell ya?
