Sit down and crack open a cold one. Let’s chat for a sec.
Delta Medallion elite status holders receive four complimentary “Have One on Us” (or HOOUs, as we call them) certificates each year. (I also received a couple of them from a Red Coat after volunteering for a #bumpertunity that made his night easier.)
“Have One on Us” drink coupons are redeemable for a free liquor, beer, or wine beverage on Delta-operated flights. (Alternative: the $2 headphones sold onboard can be had for a HOOU.)
Late one December, I had about a half-dozen HOOUs expiring at the end of the year. During my family’s final flights, I gave them to a couple of flight attendants and asked if they’d like to play Santa Claus to some passengers ordering drinks. (I also said that if the flight attendants wanted to use them for their own personal purposes, that they certainly deserved it and I’d be happy with that, too. 🙂 ) We were in Comfort+ (where adult beverages are complimentary) and didn’t need them.
The “Problem” with Have One On Us Certificates
Geez! Complain, complain, complain! you may say. A blogger whining about free stuff! (Though, in this case, it would be “wining” 😉 )
As well-intentioned as HOOUs are, there are several reasons they may be difficult for some people to redeem. And, yes, most of these are #FirstWorldProblems.
- Not all Medallions (or other HOOU coupon holders) drink alcohol
- I personally know Medallions who are recovering alcoholics. HOOUs in their current form aren’t the best gift for them.
- Medallions can get upgraded to Comfort+ or First Class — where drinks are free. The coupons are worthless.
- Not every Delta flight serves alcoholic beverages
Now, Delta may see that list, twiddle a mustache, and cackle, Yes! That’s the point! Mwahahahah! Or they may genuinely want people to redeem them for free drinks.
But it’d be great to see a little more oomph added to the HOOUs. And here are a couple of easy ways I think Delta can do that.
Allow Them to Be Used for Flight Fuel
It would be great if HOOUs could be redeemable for the Flight Fuel premium snack boxes.
Making coupons redeemable for Flight Fuel boxes would be a great way to acknowledge SkyMiles members who don’t drink alcohol. And, in general, passengers who don’t receive meals during longer flights would probably enjoy a Flight Fuel snack. (This would be a great option for Comfort+ passengers — who receive complimentary adult beverages anyway.)
Heck, my family of three could easily burn all four of my yearly HOOUs during one flight: a couple of Flight Fuel boxes for us to share and then a cocktail each for my wife and me. (If we’re in Main Cabin.) After that, we’re paying out of pocket for premium snacks the rest of the year (well, at least until the $200 airline fee credits run out on our The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express (Enrollment required. Terms apply.). Plus, it gets a good product into customers’ hands. People are more likely to talk about the Flight Fuel boxes — and SkyMiles program.
Make HOOUs Valid for THE BAR Purchases at Delta Sky Clubs
Most Sky Clubs have staffed bars offering complimentary and premium alcoholic beverages. The latter, of course, carry a charge.
Three forms of payment are accepted at Delta Sky Club bars:
- Credit or debit card
- Cash
- SkyMiles
Here’s another area where Delta could further impress its Medallions (and/or other HOOU coupon holders). What about letting people redeem the certs for a premium beverage in Sky Clubs?
And here’s another potential upside for Delta: if I burn my last HOOU on a Woodford Reserve in a Sky Club, I may be inclined to buy a round after that. (It’s hard to go from Woodford Reserve to Old Forester. Or Silver Oak to whatever house red is uncorked.)
I don’t know how many Medallions have access to Delta Sky Clubs through a qualifying American Express card or Sky Club membership. But adding value to the HOOU certificates certainly gives those without Sky Club access more incentive to join the party. And it adds a bit more potential value to those Amex cards.
Final Approach
Have One On Us coupons are a cool gift from Delta. But I wish the airline would make it easier to redeem them. Making HOOUs available for Flight Fuel boxes and Sky Club bar purchases would be a #KeepClimbing move, for sure.

I generally give my vouchers away to business associates who I know can use them. I only ever get the comp’d alcohol in the clubs as well except occasionally I will get a nice bourbon or scotch if I have a long enough layover which I try to avoid at all costs. If they could be redeemed at the club I’m sure I’d be much more inclined to use them.
I have never understood why Delta promotes alcohol as much as it does. As you said, not everyone drinks. Some people literally struggle every single flight with the temptation to have alcohol. Given how woke and politically correct Delta is these days, it’s shocking that the airline is so insensitive about alcohol.
Great suggestions: let’s hope Delta listens.
ditto
I don’t use them myself either, but like the idea of giving them to flight attendants. Thanks for the suggestion.
C’mon, Chris – it’s always been eye wash. Most flights I’ve been on last six months weren’t even “able” to serve in Main cabin due to turbulence, time, blah blah blah.
This has been discussed and presented to Delta countless times over the years. They know exactly how few of these get redeemed. I am sure they believe this somehow attracts medallions. It’s not until you get them when you realize it’s ice in winter for all the reasons you mention above.
Free WiFi coupon would be awesome (though probably useless now that DL will be offering free WiFi).
I’d even take some SkyMiles instead of these.
Well any chance you may have an extra few you don’t know what to do with?
@Chris – You may want to pay attention to tomorrows blog post (hint hint)!
It is a nice perk but for years I have given them to people seated near me if I am relegated to the Main Cabin. It is a big cost savings for them and makes for happy seatmates. However, it would be nice to also have the option to trade them in for snack boxes as Chris wisely suggests. It would show that Delta values its nondrinkers as well.
Great ideas!! If more Medallions made suggestions maybe Delta will listen.. I’m going to submit some of these same suggestions. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! I’m one of the non-drinkers with 3 years’ worth of free drink coupons. I’ve been meaning to write to Delta and suggest free Wi-Fi instead… maybe on 3 flights for silver medallion, 6 for gold, 9 for platinum, and unlimited for Diamond… THAT would be valuable to me!
It would also be nice if they could be transferred to other SkyMiles members without you having to be on the flight with them. I often purchase tickets for family members to come visit me, and wish I could also transfer the drink coupons to them for their flight.
@Lisa – Redeem and do a screen shot and email them the screen shot. Works fine.
Great idea, thanks!
I am having a hard time to use my HOOUs so this idea would be very appreciated to use some “free” stuff.
Maybe somebody from Delta will listen.
Agree with the others here…always a struggle to use the HOOU’s. Having another option or two would be great.
I also have (6) Sky Club guest passes expiring in Jan ’23. Anyone have any creative ideas of how I could utilize those?
If you’re flying Delta before the end of January 2023, you might make six random people very happy by making them your guests.
Thanks Chris. I had thought of that but wasn’t sure if the guest needed to be on my itinerary or not?
Here’s the verbiage:
“The Basic Card Member must be present in order to use the one-time guest passes and all eligibility rules of the Delta Sky Club benefit apply. The guests must be traveling on a same-day Delta-marketed or Delta-operated flight. The Card Member may only use two one-time guest passes per Delta Sky Club visit. One-time guest passes are non-transferable, cannot be assigned or sold, and have no cash value. Benefit valid only at Delta Sky Clubs. Partner lounges are not included. All Delta Sky Club rules apply.”
Perfect…thanks!!!
My unused HOOU disappeared at the end of the year and I wasn’t issued new ones. I’m platinum.
What were their expiration dates?
I too am one of the non-drinkers. I would much prefer wifi or snackboxes. I have years and years worth of useless perks in these coupons.
Later in the year I tend to “buy drinks” for others in the exit row when I don’t clear a C+ upgrade where drinks are included. In the past I used to give the paper drink coupons away to co-workers when I got upgraded and they didn’t. I like the idea of sending a screen shot to co-workers so they can use them before they expire.
I have no use for these coupons. I like your idea about using them for flight fuel (as was once possible). It would be nice if they could be used for free wifi (until that becomes free for everyone), or perhaps redeem them for miles.
