I have to give Delta some credit where it is due. The airline has been very decent during this COVID-19 nightmare by extending, again and again, the expiration dates of all kinds of Delta vouchers and credits. This has also included the Delta Amex Companion Certificates (BOGO certificates/buy one get one free-ish) as well as canceled flight vouchers we had to dump during the pandemic.
Thank you, Delta.
The airline has also over the past few years improved the types of payments you can use with BOGO certs. While in the past you could only pay in full with an Amex card (any Amex card and anyone’s Amex card) you could not use E-Credits from old tickets or gift cards. While gift cards are still off the table, E-Credits work and you can use a number of them combined together.
I have been needing to visit Chris, as we have a number of exciting things in the works for the blog — and we can accomplish much more in person. Plus, a visit to California is never a bad thing, right?
I was able to find seats and use an Amex BOGO, covering all but a few dollars off the new fare, and plug in a Wells Fargo co-Branded Amex card (since I currently don’t hold any Delta Amex cards). I also used an E-Credit in my wife’s account (as she is flying with me) to pay for the rather substantial taxes and fees on the “free” ticket.
What next?
I have already at this point in the year earned enough MQMs and MQDs to earn my 2023 Platinum Medallion status — thus I have the ability to harvest my 2023 Platinum Choice Benefit (I will still earn my many Diamond Choice Benefits by year-end as well).
I chose as my selection four Regional Upgrade certs because we can now also stack those on top of coach Companion Certificate tickets for both the paid seat and the “free” one. Shockingly enough on all 5 legs of my itinerary to LAX first class upgrade space was available.
Delta really has come a long way allowing us to stack a number of items to maximize value. The only real thing missing is the ability to additionally stack Delta gift cards as a form of payment. Since gift cards are in effect money deposited with Delta I don’t see any reason why we could not add these other than IT has not yet completed this final part of the puzzle. – René

@Rene, GOOD WORK! Do you access the SkyClub via an American Express (non DL) Platinum Card, or did you choose SkyClub membership as one of your Choice Benefits last year?
@Don – Amex AU on a corp card (for now).
@Rene, I don’t know what Am AU is. Help.
