Delta Air Lines officially opened three new gates at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Wednesday.
The gates are part of Delta’s big Sky Way project at LAX, which ultimately will connect Terminal 2, Terminal 3, and the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) all airside/post-security. T2 and T3 are now connected airside.
Delta demolished the old (and awful) Terminal 3 a couple of years ago and is constructing a new T3. That’s where the three new gates are located. The gates are 31A, 31B, and 33.
In turn, the “remote” hardstands are gone. (Thank heavens!) A Delta spokesperson explained the new space gained by the absence of hardstands allows enough space for a widebody aircraft to park at 31A.
“We are excited about these new gates as they represent the next stage of our $2.3B project there at LAX,” the spokesperson added.
This makes traveling easier for some Delta passengers going through LAX — it still doesn’t solve the problem of the airline not having enough gates at the airport. Delta didn’t really gain any new gates. They used four hardstands but and added just three gates. While waiting in the new LAX Sky Club last week, I watched a couple of arriving planes wait extended periods of time for their gates to open up.
But there’s good news: the rest of Terminal 3 should open before year’s end.

I get to check it our next month!! why has it taken decades to connect terminals at big busy airports like LAX,SFO,JFK crazy and so inconvenient!! Still not done at LAX after all of this construction???
I flew through Salt Lake City Tuesday and the plane pulled up to a hardstand. SLC has a lot more then four, plus a pretty long walk from the shuttle into the B terminal. It takes forever to get to the Sky Ckub!
I will be glad when I no longer have to wait at gate 24B. Usually, 2-3 other flights board ahead of my flight home all scheduled at the same gate at the same time….I get to destination 30-60 mins late because of this Hopefully, this will be coming to an end.
Due to route issues at other carriers, I’ve moved my LAX flights to Delta. So, I appreciate your focus on Delta and your updates on LAX in particular. I used the new SkyClub on opening day — it sets the standard for domestic lounges. The removal of hard stands is a blessing . . . which I will experience more than once next week. Thanks for the news.
