Last week I posted how very disappointed, and frankly shocked, I was that AeroMexico reps told me it would be up to a year before I got credit back for my canceled flight. Remember: they canceled the flights – I didn’t.
I was exploring all my options to get my money back faster as I had already rebooked another AeroMexico flight to replace the canceled one.
A number of very helpful readers (Leo, Martin, Josh, and more) shared their experiences choosing to have Amex get involved via the chargeback option — and how well it worked for them.
I decided to try as well.
I am happy I did! In about an hour or two I had already received a response that Amex had in fact found in my favor and that I would see the credit back into my account in a few days.
The credits have posted now to my account and unless AeroMexico challenges the charge back (they should not as they have promised to pay me back) the matter is closed.
Chalk this up to one more reason I love Amex — and not just for the 5X points I receive buying my airline tickets with my Amex Platinum card!
(Editor’s Note: The Platinum Card® from American Express earns 5X on flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel — up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year.)

Bravo! Second time I have had to take this approach with AeroMexico (first was a trip to Korea last November) and more recently (like you if I can tell from flight change being like mine) was to Quito.
I would also suggest a DOT complaint….I did that at the same time I disputed with AmEx. The DOT “agent” I got an email from alluded to the fact that I was one one many with a similar complaint regarding AeroMexico
For future reference, one of the main reasons I carry FIVE AmEx credit cards (and one charge card) is the company’s reputation for taking the customer’s side in any reasonable dispute.
The United States Treasury (through the Comptroller of the Currency, among other agencies) has strict rules about refunds in such a situation. The facts were entirely on your side. Aero México didn’t have a legal leg to stand on and hoped to prey on an unsuspecting public.
When push comes to shove, the reality is simple (I used to work for a major bank): when the credit card network orders the merchant to issue a refund in such a case, should the merchant refuse, such a decision would jeopardize the merchant’s ability to accept ANY future credit card purchases.
Good for you and a tip of the hat to my fellow readers who helped!
Had to do the same with kiwi.com they stole my money with a ryanair flight but with my British airways my bank got my full amount back. British airlines sent proof of a refund and my send the full amount to me.
