"Stuttgart airport, Germany - August 20, 2011: A Delta Air Lines Boeing 767-300(ER) is taking off to Atlanta. Delta Air Lines is the world's largest airline with some 716 planes and 111 million passengers in 2010. The airline's main hub is at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. There's a daily flight connection from Stuttgart to Atlanta."

Another fairly significant “Schedule Change Saturday” has arrived for some Delta Air Lines passengers this weekend.

What Can Happen During a Schedule Change?

Here’s what might shift when schedules update:

  • Flight departure days
    • Rare, but it happens
  • Departure and arrival times
  • Aircraft swaps
  • Seat assignments
    • Your perfect seat might disappear

Some travelers check their reservations every week to stay ahead of changes and fix issues early.

Others don’t look until a couple of days before departure — and walk straight into chaos. (That happened to a family member of mine.)

To Delta’s credit, notifications have improved. But don’t rely on them completely — it still pays to keep an eye on your trips.

If you’re changing or booking flights anyway, don’t miss the chance to earn a big bonus — some travel cards are offering at least bonus 100,000+ points right now. See some of the best offers available now.

How to Turn a Schedule Change Into a Win

Schedule changes aren’t just disruptions — they might be opportunities.

If Delta changes your itinerary by a cumulative total of three (3) or more hours, you can switch to flights that suit you better. Maybe you booked a redeye because it was the cheapest option. Well, the schedule change might help and get you a few more hours of sleep!

Here’s another great hitch: If you’re in a multi-airport city, you can often switch airports for free.

Example:

  • Swap Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) → Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR)
    • Avoid traffic, crowds, and shave time off your trip

The same idea applies elsewhere:

  • New York: JFK ↔ LaGuardia (LGA)
  • Chicago: O’Hare (ORD) ↔ Midway (MDW)
  • Dallas: DFW ↔ Love (DAL)

You can usually do this right in the app under “Change Flight.” Otherwise

Final Approach

Airline schedules change constantly — and Saturdays are when many of those updates drop.

Check your reservations regularly, stay flexible, and when the opportunity presents itself…

Turn the change into an “upgrade.”

Yesterday I had a flight from LaGuardia that was canceled when I checked first thing in the morning (5 AM). Flight from origin to LaGuardia was fine which my girlfriend and I were supposed to be on at 7 AM.

As this was a companion ticket flight, I ended up calling Delta and they got us an alternate flight to a different airport (and going through Atlanta, which I prefer over LaGuardia). Otherwise we would have been flying today and only would have had a day to visit family instead of 2.

Glad I’m diligent about checking flights otherwise we would have been screwed out of money and time.

Our regional flights from ATL gave all been pushed up by 2 hours on Saturdays which doesn’t work when we need those 9:30pm flights. Now the inbound flights are 3:30p and 7:30p which is crazy. Only on Saturdays. Somebody is crazy.
