Shrinkflation: Review of the Delta Shake Shack Burger – So Much Less Than Old Delta Burger

For many years now Delta Air Lines has provided a decent, if not even respectable good, burger in domestic first class. One of my old frequent flyer buddies enjoyed them so much that whenever I was flying without him and had the chance to send him a photo of my Delta burger lunch he would be most irritated with me (ah good times)!

A meal is presented on a tray. It includes a hamburger with a bun, cheese slices, red onion, tomato slices, lettuce, and a pickle on a plate. There is a side salad with potatoes and a red pepper slice in a bowl. A dessert plate has a slice of pie, grapes, and two types of cheese. Condiment packets of mayonnaise, mustard, and ketchup are provided, along with salt and pepper shakers. A napkin is rolled with a red band labeled "Bon Appétit."

With the above in mind I thought it would be good, and a good comparison, to peek at the old Delta burger and all the things that came with it to see if we do now have an upgrade or have yet again been “enhanced” by the Delta PR department. Let’s dive in.

The image shows an in-flight menu for a flight from ATL to MEX on November 24, 2025. The menu is for lunch and offers three main course options: 1. Three Cheese Manicotti with beef Bolognese ragu, tomato cream sauce, and Parmesan cheese. 2. Roasted Chicken Breast with charred tomato sauce, turmeric-coconut basmati rice, grilled vegetables, and crispy onion (contains sesame). 3. Southwest Harvest Salad with arugula, black beans, sweet corn, roasted red peppers, butternut squash, grape tomatoes, hard-boiled egg, and Cotija cheese. The top of the image shows a background with various plated dishes.

The image shows a section of an in-flight menu on a mobile device screen. It includes two meal options: "Spinach Ravioli" and "Shake Shack Cheeseburger." The Spinach Ravioli is described as having tomato mascarpone sauce, nut-free basil pesto, onions, and bell peppers, and is marked as vegetarian. The Shake Shack Cheeseburger includes Angus beef, cheese, a toasted potato bun, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, and ShackSauce, served with crinkle-cut potato chips and a brownie. Both options are labeled as "Limited" and require ordering 24 hours prior to departure. There are buttons for "Save Selections" and "View In-Flight Menu" at the bottom.

I had checked the Delta menu in advance for our flights and the choices looked less than exciting and not the way I wanted to start the very first day of our epic trip and cruise vacation from Lisbon. But Delta, one week out to the minute, e-mails you not just the default choices but many times other options that are hub specific. When I got the e-mail and saw the Shake Shack burger was an option I was jazzed! But did it live up to the hype and the burgers that came before it? Let’s dive in.

An airplane meal tray featuring a cheeseburger in a bun, a small bowl of salad with lettuce, tomato, and pickles, a packet of crinkle-cut potato chips, a dark chocolate brownie, and condiments including ketchup, mustard, and ShackSauce. A napkin is placed on the side.

At first glance I was not so sure this would be better than it’s predecessor. I did respect the fixings were on a separate plate but maybe not so much at the expense of the fruit and cheese plate that used to come with the old burger as you can see above.

Another big downgrade is a tiny bag of chips vs. what was a very tasty and pleasant potato salad made from fingerling spuds at that. Now to the flavor.

A partially eaten hamburger is on a white plate, showing layers of beef, lettuce, and sauce. Nearby, there are packets of ketchup and mustard, a bowl with a sauce, a bag of chips, and a packaged dark chocolate brownie. A fork and knife are on the tray.

Flavor wise this was a good burger and with the fixings fresh and crisp each bite was enjoyable. Both my and my wife’s only negative criticism was that it was on the greasy side (I know fat is flavor but still). I ate it up and felt satisfied but not overly full. Dessert was a plastic brownie that tasted very mass produced and a big downgrade from what was.

So did the Shack Shack live up to the Internet hype? Really, no not so much. While I would consider ordering this again but only if there were no other choices that were better options to choose from. It really is sad to see shrinkflation hit Delta 1st class and that this is the best they can do.

A man and a woman are sitting next to each other on an airplane, wearing black face masks. The woman is wearing a white and red floral patterned top, and the man is wearing a light-colored shirt. They are smiling and appear to be taking a selfie. The airplane seats and window are visible in the background.

Have you had a chance to try this lunch / dinner choice? Were you more or less impressed than I was? Would you order this choice again? – René

We did try the burger last week(husband ordered)It was ok but smaller than we had before-not real greasy but taste was on point/ I did the three cheese manicotti and it was hot and tasty. The pasta was soft and thin – a good thing.. A win -win for food on planes for me…
