Trust me when I say this post is not beating a dead horse (who would ever do that anyway right?)! In 2025 if you are a Delta frequent, or even infrequent, flyer you must read every word of this post and burn it into your memory to get some value flying Delta.
Why do I say value? When Delta is charging 450,000 Sky Rubles (SR) to fly Delta One to Europe when you can use Alaska points to fly AA for 55,000 in business class you need to find other ways to get value because flying all your Delta SRs for one flight is clearly frequent flyer MALPRACTICE at the highest level.
So, back to the topic at hand. We already know that Delta SCS or schedule change Saturday is one of it not the absolute best thing Delta offers us as loyal-ish customers. I mean when there are changes (the change does not have to be very much, BTW) you may be able to not just pick the perfect flights you want the same travel day as planned but even, remarkably, change the DAYS you want to fly.
But there is another ridiculously amazing feature to SCS you may not be fully taking advantage of and that is changing your departure and/or arrival airport under the CO-terminal rule.
Let me first give you a personal example to give you an overview of how you could be thinking and where you can take full advantage of SCS. Next year I will be visiting my eminent blogging colleague Chris out in the Los Angels area. While he lives much closer to BUR or Burbank airport but, since he likes me, there are other LA airports are options to fly from like LAX and so on. For me, my home town airport is SBN or South Bend International but I also consider other like AZO FWA GRR MDW ORD MKE (feel free to Google if you don’t know the airport codes).
With the above in mind I had booked a ridiculously cheap Delta SR award ticket, in first class, with utterly horrible times from LAX to ORD via Atlanta. Had I booked this into SBN it would have cost me a BOATLOAD more Delta SR’s. Well, as you may have guessed, SCS arrived and I was able to change the perfect flights I wanted and even change the arrival airport to SBN instead of ORD saving me a ton of time and money. Do keep in mind the distance between the two airports is, as the crow flies, about 85 miles so not exactly what many would consider a CO-Terminal like airports in a big city like New York that has a number of airports that people think of as CO-Terminals.
The important point to remember is that if you can book far enough out with either cash or Delta SR’s you will likely have at least one if not a number of chances to get free changes and they can include changing the departing airport as well as the arriving one resulting in huge savings and much better flight schedules and or equipment. – René

How does this relate when flying international and some/all of the flights are codeshare?
@Thomas – If Delta stock then flexibility to move to Delta flights. They can not force partner space.
I have had the problem of not being able to change if the new flights take off and land within 2 hours of the original times. Is this a limitation in your experience?
@Cyantist – If the APP or online will not allow change – try calling early Sunday mornings. If no try HUCB
I just did this yesterday. Dirt cheap flight to JFK switched to LGA the day before which was triple the cost. I’ve also switched from BUF>YYZ for free which is double the price.
Do you recommend booking “$ refundable,” rather than “e credit refundable” to avoid being forced to fly the awful oroginal booking? Or just grin and pile up the e credits if your SCS doesn’t happen?
@EFF – Stack and hope. I book far enough out that never an issue.
Love the old pix Rene… I did this recently as our early 6am flight got changed to 6:10 am causing us to have less than 50 minutes to get to a 5 hour flight via ATL.. Initially the agent said NO as ATL is easy to connect via plane train.. I said the plane train breaks down and it is an issue to get to gates E and F and soon to be G.. SHe finally said ok You can get onto the 5 am flight and make the connection easily… Fun fact we got $160 each credit as it was cheaper.. I was almost ready to HUCB when she changed her mind..
@dee – Winning!
Great, dee! You finally had some good luck!!!
Renè, will this work with companion fares in First or do you get caught with yhe limit of A or I fares?
@Edwin – Once book that should not matter as under schedule change rules.
I’ve changed several Companion Certificate reservations because of schedule changes. I usually have to call to Delta because there’s a cert applied. Research and find the flights you want, so you can say, “please put me on Delta XXXX at YY:ZZ PM,” etc.
