Two people were killed and a third person was injured during an incident this morning in a Delta Air Lines maintenance area at the carrier’s Atlanta hub, according to reports. WSBTV.com said a “tire on (a) plane exploded while it was being removed, killing a Delta employee and a contractor. A second Delta employee suffered a major injury, but there is no word on that person’s condition.”
It hasn’t yet been announced — or maybe even determined — what caused the tire to explode. The victims’ identities haven’t been released. There’s been no reported disruption to operations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) or the airline’s flights.
According to the TV station, Delta released a statement saying:
The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility (TOC 3). We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.
The Delta family is grateful for the quick action of first responders and medical teams on site. We are now working with local authorities and conducting a full investigation to determine what happened.
WSBTV also posted a message it says Delta TechOps President John Laughter sent to airline employees:
I’m deeply saddened to share that three TechOps team members were involved in an accident that took place early this morning in Atlanta. We are extending our full support to their families at this difficult time and conducting an investigation to determine what happened. This news is heartbreaking for all of us.
What a tragic event. You’re in our thoughts, Delta folks.
