I crossed the $25,000 spending mark on my Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card several weeks ago — thus hitting the Delta Amex MQD Waiver.

Well, I spent the required amount. But a few days later, my SkyMiles profile’s spending tracker was stuck at $19,000. My Reserve card’s Status Boost meter, however, was pretty spot-on: I was up to about $27,000 in eligible spending, creeping toward my bonus MQM.
I finally crossed the $30,000 threshold. Delta sent me a congratulatory email announcing that I could deposit or gift the 15,000 bonus MQM. Whoo-hoo!
I checked on my MQD Waiver spending. The meter increased — to $23,000.
My MQD Waiver spending finally updated to $25,000 — eight days later.
According to Amex’s status boost tracker, my wife passed her $25,000 spending mark last week. Delta has her at $23,000.
I don’t remember MQD Waiver spending totals taking this long to update. The numbers were maybe a couple of days behind the actual, real-time spending totals. But it was never this slow. (Although, my wife and I qualified for status last year through MQD and didn’t use the Delta Amex MQD Waiver. Was 2022 slow?)
An Amex source told me words to the effect of Hey, everything’s working fine on our end.
Then again, we’re pretty much due for a Delta Amex MQD Waiver glitch — it’s practically that time of the year. (Remember August 2022?)
My Chat with a Delta Rep
I used Delta’s messaging system on Delta.com to see what’s causing the hold-up. The rep sent me some copied and pasted verbiage about how it takes up to 6-8 weeks for numbers to get updated, totals reflect only eligible spending and purchases, and all that other boring stuff.
Shouldn’t the Delta Amex Spend Bonus and MQD Waiver Numbers Update at the Same Time?
I’m sorry to inject some logic here.
But if Delta is up to speed with our Status Boost spending, why can’t MQD Waiver numbers update accordingly?
I find it confounding (and irritating) that my $30,000 spending figure updated in a timely manner — but it took eight days for the $25,000 meter (a figure $5,000 less!) to correctly update.
How does this happen? How can the numbers not be updated simultaneously? Or does it have something to do with a “waiting period” of sorts — in case cardholders drop below the $25,000 because of chargebacks, returns, etc.?
Who Cares? What’s the Big Deal?
This is usually the time when people scramble to the Comments section to chastise me for writing about such First World Problems.
Or they’re upset Delta status can be earned through eligible credit card spending. Take it up with Delta. (Spoiler alert: Good luck. Other airlines do this, too.)
But the MQD Waiver is important for plenty of people.
First — and most obvious — it helps travelers (re)qualify for Delta Medallion elite status. That stinks if you spent $25,000 and should have elite status (or get kicked up a tier) before a trip — but SkyMiles hasn’t updated its numbers and you lose out.
Next, reaching the Delta Amex MQD Waiver is the fifth tie-breaker in the great Delta upgrade hierarchy. Based on my experience, it actually comes into play. My wife and daughter travel on a separate PNR/confirmation number from me when we travel. This way, all of us can sit in Comfort+ and try to get upgraded to first class.
There have been several times when I reached my Delta Amex MQD Waiver on my Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card and before we knocked out the $25,000 on my wife’s Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card. Our statuses and fare classes were the same on trips (neither of us is a Delta corporate traveler). Sure enough, I was a few spots higher than them on the upgrade list. (Which didn’t matter because all of us either cleared or didn’t.)
This isn’t a good look for Delta — and it sort of drags their BFF (American Express) into the mess, too. But if Delta wants people to apply for co-branded Amex credit cards — which they do — they need to make customers happy. Putzing around with people’s elite status isn’t the way to do it.

Related to this IT problem, I reached the spending level to receive or gift my 15000 MQMs. I followed the link in their email. I chose to give the MQMs to my niece, twice the web site said it was not a valid Sky Miles number. I had the number in front of me and used it many time before purchasing tickets etc. The third time the number was accepted ( I guess) because the page went away. Unlike many web transactions that tell you not to close the browser, this page says nothing. It doesn’t tell you transaction complete, or dont close the page or anything else. Days go by, and no MQMS. I try to follow the link and do it again, “sorry you haven’t reached the spend level required. More calls to Delta, now they tell me I might have to wait 2 weeks of business days. I foresee a huge problem. I called Amex, they said its Deltas problem. Any suggestions?
You keep talking about the $25k. I am still waiting to select my GUCs for an upcoming overseas trip after hitting the $250k eligible spend 10 days ago. But it still only says $246k. Nothing I can do but just sit and wait.
I see that too, I had a bunch of spend that seems to take almost a month to hit. Thx for the background.
The latest Delta/AmEx glitch I experienced was that it took more than 5 business days for redeemable miles to post following the statement date for my Reserve card. In the past these always happened almost simultaneously. Something is definitely going on with the Delta/AmEx integration.
The biggest problem you have here is the T&Cs. You complain about. A process not happening faster, but it is actually happening faster than they told you it would happen.
The biggest reason they want to taint that long is to account for returns, and credits.
This is not about first world problems. This is about accepting what they tell you they are giving you.
I agree there is always a lag in their system!!I guess they want it that way or they would hurry up and fix it!!!
I’m confused, the MQDs have nothing to do with the AMEX spending. The MQMs are tied to the AMEX cards.
@Tim – Reaching $25,000 in spend grants you a MQD spending waver for up to Platinum Medallion.
Hi Rene, You’re correct. I confused myself with how the MQDs created the MQM bonus miles. Thanks for the post.
I also received my 25K email acknowledgement and waited 2 weeks for the numbers to change. I got a call from a Delta rep 4 weeks later. The explanation i received is they are waiting to see whether we are gifting the MQM’s or not (there is apparently a 30 day window to decide). Doesn’t explain why the spend number doesn’t update (never mind when the MQM post
“The explanation i received is they are waiting to see whether we are gifting the MQM’s or not…”
*sigh*
What difference does that make? Geeezzz.
If you get a Delta ticket through the Chase portal using Chase points, do you get full MQD for the flight?
Yep! It’s considered a cash fare.
it is curious how miles are deducted immediately yet not added for awhile.
I have close to the same problem, but I think mine is worse. I need just under 15,000 MQM’s to hit Platinum, and my AmEx Platinum shows my spend of $30k in the Delta app. I also chatted with a rep through the app and they claimed, despite the Delta App showing the $30k spend, it would take 8-10 weeks for them to confirm and give me the 15,000 MQM bonus. That is 2-3 months, what a disappointment!
I think the whole MQD business is ridiculous. It’s so complicated to qualify, with a combination of either MQS or MQM and either MQD or MQD Waiver. It’s also frustrating that MQD and MQD Waiver are completely separate, so you could come close to qualifying with either of these metrics, but you can’t add them up (which you can with United). It’s also irritating that if you don’t live in the USA, you don’t need to qualify with MQD.
Is it not when you actually pay off the card? That’s the assumption I’ve operating off of. Could be wrong
Ron – No. In fact Amex would LOVE you to carry a balance – clearly we never do.
So serious question.. though probably not in the realm of reality.. you max out your card.. and then default.. are they coming back for your miles?
I believe they can, yes.
