Do you currently hold either a Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card and want to get the sexy, new metal card made from a real Delta 747?

Well, I have some bad news.

Existing Reserve cardholders are no longer eligible to request a replacement card with the 747 metal. Reader Blake chipperly pointed out, “This is now only offered for new card members or upgrades. Entire article should be deleted.”

American Express confirmed to me:

We are thrilled by the incredible response to the new limited-edition card design and while we wish we could offer it to everyone who wants one, there’s a limited supply of cards we could make from Delta Ship #6307. Beginning July 1 through August 3 the Boeing 747 credit card design will be available for people applying for a new Reserve or Reserve Business Cards or upgrading from a Delta SkyMiles Gold or Platinum Card while supplies last. The response to this limited-edition card design has been truly amazing and we will continue to look for ways to offer our Card Members more unique products in the future.

(Maybe Gold cards made from CRJ-200s? 😉 )

Final Approach

Current Delta Reserve cardholders who haven’t ordered a 747 metal replacement card are no longer eligible. The limited edition card is open only to customers opening new Reserve card accounts or Amex members looking to upgrade their cards to Reserves.

You know what this means??? EVEN MORE CROWDED SKYCLUB LOUNGES! They just can’t stop trying to oversell the Reserve Card, so the lounge experience gets worse and worse. BYW, I have one of these 747 Cards and don’t like it. It is “tinnier” (weighs only 12 grams instead of 17 grams like the old one and the real non Delta Amex Platinum Card). I actually think I can bend it and break it, but won’t try. Tinny, too light, feels cheap.

The club lounges are supposed to be full just like planes are. Otherwise it’s bad business.

I just tried to order one for my husband on his account (before I read your article) and the agent told me that it was not available for now. Interesting that he did NOT tell me that it’s no longer available for existing card holders. I think that this is not fair to the loyal existing card holders. They will offer to the new ones but not make it available to the existing ones that have spent hundreds of thousands with Amex? It is not right!

I would argue that full with lines waiting to get in …. or not being able to get in at all due to being full is bad business!

I didn’t request the new metal Reserve card. I don’t like metal credit cards. They’re too heavy. I never asked for a metal card when Am Ex sent me a Platinum renewal card years ago. I was disappointed with how heavy it is. If every card in my wallet was made out of metal, I need a rollaboard in which to carry them. If Am Ex wanted to improve their cards they’d make them out of carbon carbon fiber or offer plastic cards as an option.

When I requested the 747 card I saw there was also a plastic option.

I am so glad to have obtained a replacement Delta Airlines 747 Amex Reserve Card when it was still available to us current Reserve Card holders. I actually needed a new card because my original, plastic Reserve Card had a crack in it (probably from severe over-use and age!), so seeing the 747 design spurred me immediately to action. I love the new card, the new look, and it feels heavier and more substantial than my prior Reserve Card that cracked.

Signing off for now as a Gold Medallion (very soon to be Platinum Medallion) from Woodford County, Ky, home of Woodford Reserve served on Delta flights. Looking forward to my SkyClub visits for this weekend’s travel, and to my Comfort Plus and First Class upgrades already confirmed for my 3-day business travel…..

I’m glad I was able to score my card as an existing Reserve cardholder when I did. I was still using the old dark gray plastic card as I had never been sent the purple metal one.

It’s a gimmick, but all marketing is a gimmick. I still enjoy having the card and have actually received comments on it at multiple restaurants (using it for dining because of a referral deal to earn +5 miles/$ on dining).
