Delta and American Express announced two Reserve cards made of metal from a retired Boeing 747 airplane.

Update: July 12: Existing Delta Reserve cardholders are no longer eligible to order replacement cards for the 747 metal Reserves. The text and images of our original June 16 post are included below, in case you want to know how to order a replacement Amex card in general.

I don’t know about you but I was pretty thrilled to learn Delta and Amex issued limited edition Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Cards made of actual 747 metal.

The companies, of course, also relaunched some pretty massive welcome offers.

But don’t worry, fellow Reserve cardmembers. You don’t need to apply for another Reserve account to get the 747 metal card. Amex will send you one at no extra charge. You simply have to request the card. Here’s how to do that on the app and Amex’s website. The card is available only through August 3.

(Not yet a Delta Reserve cardholder? Learn here how to apply for the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or visit this page for the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card.)

You will need your current Reserve card to complete the process, so take a minute and grab it from your wallet.

Also, ordering a replacement does not affect your current card until you activate the replacement card. Shop as normal.

Request a Delta Reserve 747 Metal Card on the Amex App

I placed my request on the Amex app ASAP this morning. Basically, you order a replacement card and select different card art. Here’s how I did it. You will need your current Reserve card to complete the process, so take a minute and grab it from your wallet.

First, open your Amex app. Select your Reserve card. On the next screen tap “Account.” You’ll see a list of options. Tap “Replace a Card.”

On the “Replace a Card” screen, tap your applicable Reserve card. Then you’ll see another screen. Tap “Continue to Replace Card.” Select “Change Card Design” as your reason for replacement and tap “Continue.”

Select the “Boeing 747” art. Tap “Continue.” I was asked for the three-digit code on the back of my Reserve card (not the four-digit code on the front). Tap “Continue.” The next screen asks you to type in whatever answer you have your mother’s maiden name. Tap “Continue.”

Confirm that your delivery address is correct and tap “Replace Card.” You’ll see a replacement card order confirmation. Tap “Done.”

My Delta 747 Reserve card should arrive in about a week or so.

Request a Delta Reserve 747 Metal Card on the Amex Website

Okay, so I can take you only so far on this one. My wife loves purple — the color of her current Reserve card. So, she will not be getting the Delta 747 Reserve card. But here’s how you can get the process started on the Amex website.

Log in to your account and select “Account Services.”

Then choose “Replace a Card.”

Select the card and then choose “I want to change my Card’s design.”

You’ll see these options. Select the 747 and press “Continue.”

That’s where I stopped. But I’m confident you can handle it from there — I believe in you. 🙂

Final Approach

Current members can easily order the new 747 metal version of the Delta Reserve card for free. The process takes a couple of minutes. It’s just the week-ish long wait that’s difficult!

    Thanks for the detailed directions.

Before you posted, I just called the number on the back of the card and was able to order a 747 card through the automated phone process. I did not speak to a live person.

I wonder if the supply is limited?

It is indeed a limited edition. There’s only so much metal from one airplane 🙂 .

Is the card number the same or is it changed to a new number? If so, that makes vanity too much trouble to change card numbers in dozens of accounts.

Card number should stay the same. But I believe your card gets a new expiration date and three- and four-digit codes.

My card was just replaced at Amex’a request due to a potentially fraudulent charge. I’m told I am not eligible for another replacement so soon. Very weird.

The last piece of confirmation information may vary from person to person. You got asked Mother’s Maiden Name but I was asked for my numerical confirmation PIN. Lucky I remembered it because I RARELY have to use it. lol

Is this only the Business accounts or personal as well?

Business and personal. If you apply for a new account, you can select which card you want. If you’re a current cardholder, you can request the new 747 cardDr.

Remember that the bonus only applies to new approvals who’ve never held that particular card before (as opposed to just upgrading a card).

This is now only offered for new card members or upgrades. Entire article should be deleted.

Ordered mine on June 16th (as an existing user)… received the regular design instead. Called back and was told no longer available to existing user… so frustrating. Does anyone know if these cards will be brought back to existing users? I think not?

No word. But I’m sure there are more than a few 747s waiting for homes in wallets. 🙂
