How I Already Used Rakuten and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express’s Dell Statement Credit to Save on a Big Purchase!

We’re barely into July — and I already used the July-December portion of The Business Platinum Card® from American Express‘s Dell statement credit feature.

And I scored big time when stacking with Rakuten and a pair of Amex Offers! Here’s what I bought and how I saved.

The Amex Business Platinum Card’s Dell Statement Credit

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express members may earn up to $400 in statement credit each year for eligible purchases made through Dell: $200 from January through June and $200 from July through December. (Enrollment is required and terms apply.)

Dell Amex Offers

I added a pair of Dell Amex Offers to my Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card.

  • Save 10% on eligible Dell purchases, up to a total of $1,500. (Enrollment required, terms apply, and offer expires August 1, 2022.)
  • Earn one bonus Delta SkyMile per dollar spent, up to 25,000 bonus miles (Enrollment required, terms apply, and offer expires December 31, 2022.)

My Purchase

I started my shopping session through Rakuten, which offered 10% cashback on Dell Technologies for Work purchases. (You may also choose to earn American Express® Membership Rewards® points instead.) Rakuten is offering elevated deals at some merchants during the holiday weekend, though some of them are for one day only, so make sure to strike if you see a good deal.

Then I found this Dell portable monitor I’ve literally been looking at for the past couple of months:

I added it to my cart and proceeded to the checkout screen. The total came to $333.49 after tax.

Dell allows customers to split payments. (Thank you, Dell!) So, I used the Business Platinum Card to pay $200. I applied the remaining $133.49 to my Delta Reserve Business Amex.

By the way, what a horrible Membership Rewards points redemption rate! 47,641 points to cover $333.49? Um, no.

Several emails from American Express popped up on my phone a couple of minutes later. They congratulated me for taking advantage of the Dell statement credit perk on my Business Platinum card, the 10% savings offer at Dell from my Delta Reserve Business Amex, and the bonus SkyMiles offer on the Business Reserve.

How Much I’ll End Up Saving

My total was $333.49. Here’s how the savings break down:

  • Rakuten: $29.99 cashback (10% of the 299.99 item price)
  • Dell Business Platinum credit: $200 statement credit
  • Amex Delta Business Reserve: $13.99 statement credit

My total estimated savings is $243.98. My new monitor cost me $89.51 out of pocket. Plus, I earned 200 Membership Rewards points (1X per dollar spent) on the Business Platinum card.) And let’s not forget those 133 bonus SkyMiles on top of the 1X the card earns for each dollar spent on general purchases. So, I’ll be 266 SkyMiles richer. (Hey, it’s better than a kick to the head.)

Final Approach

If you hold The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, remember your new installment of the Dell statement credit is now available! ($200 from July through December. Enrollment is required and terms apply.) Don’t forget to stack with cashback portals such as Rakuten or TopCashback and other Amex Offers!

So Rakuten started the day at 10% Dell and now dropped to 2%?

It seems now that was only in effect for Friday. But Rakuten is running a holiday weekend promotion — check Rakuten again Sunday and Monday because it may return to that or the other Dell shops accessible.

Split payments?! Why did I think of that?! You just gave me another reason to accept AmEx’s preapproved offer to open a second Business Platinum account. I also consider it valuable because now I may add a second airline for incidental reimbursement. Currently, I have jetBlue but really need United as well. I travel jetBlue often enough to burn $200 a year on seat upgrades and checked bags. My wife travels United often enough that I could use it to pay fees and taxes on reward redemptions for her. Thanks for the brainstorm! I already loved your blog (you have done well to maintain René’s former volume and relevance). Now, I love it even more!
