Where are the AeroMexico Mileage Runs to Europe?!

An AeroMexico 737 is seen at Mexico City International Airport (officially known as Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez).

Delta Air Lines partner mileage runs can be a very cost-effective and quick way to earn a bunch of MQD toward elite status. (Here’s how and why.) AeroMexico business class mileage runs to Europe are particularly popular with our readers.

But something peculiar happened in the last part of 2021: AeroMexico trips from the United States to Europe pretty much disappeared from not only booking sites but even AeroMexico’s own website. (I know one of the agents at Point.Me was resourceful and booked some AeroMexico trips to Europe for a couple of people. That’s one of the reasons we keep recommending them!)

And unless something’s changed in the past few minutes, we still don’t see any AeroMexico flights to buy from the US to Europe (via Mexico City, of course).

There’s no problem finding AeroMexico trips to the Caribbean and South America. But those generally aren’t as MQD-lucrative as the European runs. (Plus, so many people seem to love visiting Europe.)

So what the heck’s going on?!

A New Chapter?

AeroMexico filed for voluntary Chapter 11 petitions in the United States in late June 2020. The company got the go-ahead for a $1 billion financing bid less than two months later.

And last week, it was reported that Grupo Aeromexico “reached a $40-million deal with a group of unsecured creditors to withdraw their objection to the airline’s bankruptcy restructuring plan.” (Reuters.) Apparently, said creditors accused Delta Air Lines and four individuals of profiting off AeroMexico’s lousy luck.

So, now a bankruptcy hearing starts. That’ll take a while.

A travel industry contact speculates that if AeroMexico’s bankruptcy emergence plan is approved, then we’ll again be able to book flights from the US to Europe itineraries through AeroMexico.

Again, that’s speculation. But let’s hope this person is correct!

Final Approach

We haven’t blogged any AeroMexico mileage runs to Europe because, well, they don’t seem available to book. But that’s likely related to their airline’s bankruptcy issue. Now that they settled a beef with creditors, their emergence from bankruptcy could well be on the right track. And if all goes well, we’ll be booking AeroMexico business class mileage runs to Europe in the near-ish future.

In the meantime, remember that Point.Me (formerly Juicy Miles) is a fantastic resource for finding and booking mileage runs.

I have been able to book for this year originating in ORD and YYZ and then on to MEX and CDG . A bit more expensive they have been, however. Last year I did both through ORD for about $1600. This year I Found them for about $2600.

Chris, twice Amex offered Platinum card customers the limted-time offer to transfer miles from Amex Platinum to Aeromexico without transfer fee and with discounts. Delta and Amex are partners, do I wonder if this promotion was related to Aeromexico’s troubles. In my first transfer I received double miles for my points, and in my second, 25% more. I considered transferring to other airlines, but Aeromexico’s transfer offered a much better deal both times. We travel often to Brazil so hoping to find a nice business class fair before the end of 2022.
