Do you have any upcoming trips booked on Delta Air Lines? You might want to shop around for your same flights — and see if their prices decreased.
(That’s a good practice for any airline or hotel reservation, actually.)
Case in point: reader “Bob” (a Diamond Medallion®) gave me a couple of examples.
He booked a roundtrip ticket from Detroit to Cancun. Delta metal both ways. He paid 136,000 SkyMiles roundtrip for Main Cabin plus 32,800 SkyMiles for roundtrip upgrades to first class. That’s 168,000 SkyMiles per person. So it cost 336,000 SkyMiles total (and $174 in taxes) for him and Mrs. Bob.
Gross.
A couple of days ago, he checked Delta.com for the same itinerary.
It was much cheaper.
So he canceled the first class award trip and used Pay With Miles instead. He bought the same Main Cabin tickets for 60,000 SkyMiles and about $56. Total. Plus, he used upgrade certificates to get back into first class.
Bob also had a coach trip booked to New York. It cost him 33,000 SkyMiles for a Main Cabin seat. He rebooked that for 21,000 SkyMiles — in first class.
Again, this is always a good practice. But I’ve heard now from a few people who’ve noticed Delta has some low fares in the next few months. So check any upcoming trips — and see if you can rebook them at better prices.

I notice your reader did not use 100% Pay with Miles. I am guessing, he, like me. always leaves a bit left over to pay with a credit card (I use Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card) that gives the best travel protection.
I just noticed the same for a CUN-ATL-CUN reservation I have for February.
Thanks for the reminder. I just checked a flight for a quick business trip I have in 2 days… the price for the flight had been reduced by $32.20. While not a bunch of $$, it’s better in my pocket for future business travel then going to waste. Thanks again!
