If you’re in the New England area and want some 1) MQM and 2) a few hours of tropical air, this Delta mileage run to Kona on Hawaii’s big island might be great for you. (I bet the warm weather sounds very nice — especially right about now.)

First things first: it is a Main Cabin run. But if you have any unused Upgrade Certificates burning a hole in your virtual pocket, this mileage run may present a good redemption opportunity. The transcontinental flights (JFK-LAX and vice versa) are aboard 767s. So, there’s the chance you can upgrade to Delta One (read: lie-flat seats and better service).

If you’re still with me, great. Delta says it’ll yield 10,960 MQM and $414 MQD. It currently prices out to $500.40. That makes the MQM yield about 4.6 cents per MQM (CPMQM). This may be a fun way to use some Delta travel credits expiring this year (if you have any).

There are several dates available during February and March. I picked a Friday date for our example because, well, it’s a Friday and you have Sunday to recover. 🙂

Delta mileage run from Boston to Kona, Hawaii

Here is a Google Flights links to get you started. Remember to choose Main Cabin before proceeding to the Delta check out.

Kona is the only airport on this itinerary without a Delta Sky Club. (The Kona airport has, like, one restaurant. It may or may not be open when you land. Plan accordingly.)

But the rest have Delta lounges. The below cards grant you complimentary access to Delta Sky Clubs when flying Delta marketed and operated itineraries.

  • The Platinum Card® from American Express
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card

If you have just the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card or Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card, you can enjoy the Delta Sky Clubs for $39 per visit.

Hawaii Travel Requirements

As of this posting, Hawaii still requires mandatory quarantine for those unvaccinated against COVID-19 or who don’t present a negative COVID-19 test taken 72 hours before their direct flight to Hawaii.

Simply put: either get vaccinated or take a COVID test within 72 hours before the LAX to KOA flight.

“When Will You Find a Mileage Run That Works for My Dates and Goals?!”

Please don’t wait around for us to pull a magical mileage run rabbit out of our hats! Get in touch with the mileage run department at Point.Me (formerly Juicy Miles). Yep. There is an entire department staffed by people whose real job is to create mileage runs.

I’ve known several members of the Point.Me staff for years. Not only are they travel bookers — but they’re points and miles geeks like you and me. And they love helping people find the most bang for their buck.

Tailoring mega-mileage runs for the lowest prices possible are personal challenges they love accepting. They often stun René and me with some of the trips they magically piece together.

Drop them a note now to create a mileage run from your favorite airport and on your preferred airline alliance.
