We wrote last week about American Express and Delta relaunching a very cool limited-time promotion: Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Cards (both consumer/personal and business) made with skins from real, decommissioned Delta 747 aircraft. The opportunity is open to both new and existing cardholders.
But if you don’t hold a Delta Reserve card — or are in the market for one — don’t fret. You can still get a piece of a real plane — and even get your name etched onto it!
PlaneTags offers baggage tags made from not only Delta planes but other carriers — and even some military aircraft.
For example, the basic 767-300 tag ranges in price from $29.95 to $59.95, depending on which color scheme you select.
However, you can customize the tag with your (or a gift recipient’s) name and contact information. Those cost between $39.95 and $69.95, again depending on which color you select.
But that’s also significantly less than the annual fee of, say, a Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card. (See rates and fees here.). Then again, a PlaneTag doesn’t come with the bells and whistles of a card with Sky Club access and more.
The tags are made from aircraft N143DA, which is a retired Boeing 767-332. PlaneTags says she was “one of Delta’s long haul powerhouses from 1998 to 2017.” According to FlightAware data, her final flight was from Atlanta (ATL) to San Bernardino, CA (SBD) on May 28, 2017.
I wrote about PlaneTags last year when I ordered a Delta CRJ-200 baggage tag to celebrate the airline finally getting rid of those awful planes.
PlaneTags “take(s) old aircraft and give(s) them a second life. This is our opportunity to create something new by honoring the old.” (You can see here how the tags are made.)
They have tags made from commercial planes, military aircraft, and helicopters. I’ve spent a lot of time browsing their selection. Make sure to use their “Search” function to find something you like.
Final Approach
The Delta Amex 747 promotion is super cool, and we’re excited to receive our cards. But if you don’t have a Reserve card or it’s not in your plans but you still want your name etched a piece of real airplane skin, check out PlaneTags.
