Delta Air Lines ordered just over five dozen widebody planes, with the newest announcement coming on Tuesday afternoon. The orders are split almost evenly between Boeing and Airbus.
For years, we heard rumors that Delta would add the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to its fleet. The Atlanta-based carrier officially announced last week its order of thirty (30) 787-10 aircraft (in addition to the previously ordered 100 737-MAX10 narrowbodies). No word yet on when the Dreamliners will actually start flying Delta passengers. But I bet it’ll make for a fun inaugural flight experience!
Delta is spreading the love to Airbus, too. The French company (with plants in the United States) received an order for sixteen (16) A330-900 and fifteen (15) A350-900 planes.
According to a press release, “Delta’s A330-900 fleet will increase to 55 aircraft, and the A350 fleet will reach 79 aircraft, including 20 A350-1000s that Delta expects to begin receiving in early 2027.”

This is expected but sad news for us sentimental saps who love the Boeing 767. Delta still has 58 of the old birds in their fleet. But they’re being phased out. (At least, the 767-300ERs are.)
I fondly remember flying widebodies on some domestic hops between Minnneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) and Los Angeles (LAX). I’d love to see those return but I think we have to settle more frequent-ish departures on the A321neo (which Delta seems to love) and growing 737 fleet.
Delta is investing a chunk of money into new planes and upgrading most of the existing fleet. I’m curious to see what additional routes and/or line frequencies Delta adds with the new widebodies — keeping in mind, of course, that the 767s are enjoying their final years before retirement. The 787s, A330s, and A350s will probably inherit some of those routes.
What do you think of the widebody additions?
