Open Mic Night? Young Girl Puts on Impromptu Disney Concert for Delayed Delta Flight

A young girl is standing in the aisle of an airplane, holding a phone to her ear with her mouth open as if speaking or singing. She is surrounded by other children seated in the plane, and a woman in a purple shirt is standing behind her, smiling. The interior of the airplane is visible, with rows of seats and overhead compartments.

Most of us know that children love singing. They’ll sing pretty much anything — preexisting songs or tunes they make up as they go.

An adolescent girl provided some musical entertainment for Delta Air Lines passengers during a delayed flight. She belted out her rendition of “How Far I’ll Go” from the Disney film Moana. But not everyone is amused.

Got some explaining to do?

Redditor DependentSky8800 says they were on they were on the flight, a delayed flight from Atlanta (ATL) or Orlando (MCO). “They legitimately came over the PA after 2 hours at the gate and said ‘We have some entertainment for you all, so and so is going to sing for us,'” they report. “Everyone in (first class) just stared at each other in disbelief…all I wanted to do was sit quietly in first class when this whole mess started. It just kept going and going.”

“Of course it was a flight to Orlando,” notes ppatek78. (“Do they do Eminem if they are late into Detroit?” asked blackbirdspyplane.)

A lot of Redditors were not amused.

  • “I’m pressing the call button incessantly, nonstop until this stops.” (Full_Secretary)
  • “Where are the Air Marshals when you need them.” (Background_Silver918)
  • “Uncalled for. FA needs to be reprimanded – losing control over the PA system. PA system is for flight related announcements.” (kveggie1)
  • “I’m sure the kid is very nice, but this looks like Karen training. ‘Remember, you’re always the main character.'”

Easily the best comment:

“Was she in first class? They let first class do pretty much anything they want. I learned that from Billy Idol.” (leko)

For reference (NSFW if you scrub all the way to the beginning but its cued up to a safe-for-work spot):

Back to regular programming. I get that flights to Orlando are chocked full of families going to Disney World. Kids get antsy. I get that flight attendants might feel some pressure to do something to entertain the cabin. (Just imagine if there were an aspiring George Carlin or Nikki Glaser pubescent comedian on board who had their turn with the PA. That would’ve been something.)

Singing or speaking before an audience isn’t easy for everyone. I admire this young lady’s courage to perform in front of people. (Especially singing!) She didn’t quite nail the tune but did better than most of us probably could. So, good for her.

But, as AnActualSquirrel noted, imagine this interrupting whatever you’re watching on the seatback entertainment.

On another level, Redditor C-MontgomeryChurns more or less sums up what I was thinking:

“…my heart low key goes out to the decent parents on that flight who were forced to explain to their kids why they can’t also sing on the PA. It’d be mighty difficult to keep your kid sane on a 2 hr tarmac delay normally but now add to that needing to explain why some people are (poop)heads and no I’m not also going to let you also be a (poop)head just because someone else is just compounds the awful.”

Not that I think anyone was a (poop)head in this situation but I imagine other children assumed it was Delta’s Open Mic Night in Atlanta. No one know how far it could’ve gone. (ba-dum-bum)

What do you think?

I think the kid should have had her singing strictly sent to the cockpit for the pilots enjoyment. The pilots could thank the FA later.

So, not only are you stuck going to Orlando, this is what you get on the way there.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts as we descend for landing into the fifth circle of hell. And thank you for flying Delta!”

I think it’s cute. I have issues with the lack of modest clothing, but that’s a general issue today.
