Current members of The Business Platinum Card® from American Express may earn a one-time $250 statement credit after using their Amex Business Platinum to spend a minimum of $2,500 across one or more eligible purchases of flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel®. I don’t see any restrictions about booking across multiple carriers. As I read it, you could spend $1,000 on Delta flights, $1,000 on United flights, and $500 on Southwest.
Again, you must go to your card account and opt in to this Amex Offer. The process takes about five seconds.
Better to Book Through Airlines or Amex Travel?
The Amex Business Platinum earns 5X Membership Rewards points on flights, pre-paid hotels, short-term rentals, and prepaid flight + hotel packages booked with American Express Travel. There’s no specific bonus category for general travel or purchases made directly with airlines. Those earn 1X and fall under the card’s all other eligible purchases realm.
You stand to earn up to 10,000 more bonus points purchasing your airfares through Amex Travel than directly with airlines. But some people get squirrely about buying flights through anyone other than the airlines themselves. So, do whatever makes you more comfortable. I’ve purchased flights through Amex Travel for more than 10 years and can’t remember any major problems.
Exclusions
As with almost every promotion, there are a few purchases that don’t qualify. Here’s what specifically excluded:
- Charter or private jet flights (can you believe that?! 🙂 )
- Flights booked as part of a vacation or travel package
- Inflight purchases
- Gift cards
- Purchase of miles/points
- Any other purchases made within airports such as retail, dining, and lounge charges
That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if inflight purchases and lounge entry charges counted. Don’t count on it but stranger things have happened.
