Going Bananas: How a Delta Sky Club Rep Enforcing Lounge Rules Went Viral

The Delta Sky Club logo is seen inside the Delta Sky Club “satellite” annex airport lounge inside Terminal 2 (T2) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in Los Angeles, CA.

Delta Sky Clubs are popular (to say the least). Travelers often see lines to get in. There are rules like you can only enter within three hours of your flight (but reps now have some flexibility with this – if they want to, that is). One of the “House Rules” you must abide by is that “Food and beverages may not be removed from any Delta Sky Club.” Then again, it is funny that Delta at the same time has, in some airports, a “Grab and Go Experience,” and I guess we should not assume that applies to the other clubs. Why does this matter?

a bunch of bananas in a metal basket

As you can see from the featured photo in this post the point of interest has become a lowly banana. Reddit user “zaftpunjab” has created a viral moment that is blowing up the Delta thread on the popular micro-blogging site during a visit last month to a Sky Club in Minneapolis. The user posts:

“I got reported for trying to take a banana (banana icon used) out of the lounge! Someone tell me this is all a nightmare and my $700 a year isn’t a complete waste. I just wanted a banana” – Reddit

I have to admit, over the many decades of flying Delta, I may have grabbed a banana and run out of time to eat it in the club and popped it in my bag to enjoy on the next flight so I am not innocent of breaking this rule in my lifetime. And it seems I am not the only one as not only have others on Reddit done this as well but now it has become a “thing” to grab a banana and then post “selfie” photos of Delta bananas all over the place.

For example, there is this one that seemed to dare them to stop him:

I made sure they saw me take it

Or this one who found one in the Sky Club bathroom?

Who did this? Hilarious banana drama continues at MSP Sky Club.
byu/loonsjalkapallo indelta

Just how many bananas are now exiting the club compared to before?

Had it whipped out the entire time!

Even those good in AI have gotten into the banana craze:

Just spotted at MSP

Now, here is the thing – I know rules are rules, and the Sky Club rep was well within their rights to stop the individual from walking out with the banana, but I mean, come on, Delta. What did breaking the rule cost you?

a scale in a grocery store

Bananas are 49 cents a pound at Sam’s Club. Being generous, a single banana would cost Delta around 17 cents! Was it worth upsetting a customer over such a small thing? Plus, as we have now seen on Reddit, silly small things not worth getting worked up over can and do go viral and now who knows how many bananas have walked out the door that would not have before this incident.

Anyway, if you see someone eating or taking selfies or other photos of a banana outside the Delta Sky Club – now you know why this may be a thing! – René

And I imagine that with all of the unwanted bananas that the rule-fearing crowd left behind, the ever friendly Delta SkyClub staff in MSP would stay after shift, for free, and bake banana bread for a local shelter.

I’ve seen videos of people stocking up their coolers with beer…probably where this rule comes from

@William – Maybe but I think there is a HUGE difference between one banana and alcohol.

I’ve walked out past the desk with a couple of cookies in my hand. Granted I was munching on one but still had a whole one left.

    I know, I’m a rebel.

And they provide disposable coffee cups
With covers and recall they encourage you to take a cuppa with you on your way out …… or
Has that changed? Will there be a Cup Inspector
    At the exit
    Door?

I’ve always wondered how many people A DAY take a cuppa-something-other-than-coffee (IfYaCatchMyDrift) out of lounges. (I never have — at least, that I recall.)

They also have a rule against bringing food INTO the club, from other venues in the airport.
