I have to say I am impressed with Delta. You see, Delta has a clock for meals. If you fly out before 9:45 AM you get breakfast in first class (if the flight length is 900+ miles, that is that they call “MEDIUM – LONG FLIGHTS”). If you depart after 9:45 AM you get lunch. Dinner starts at 4 PM.
With those basics in mind, I was booked on a flight from Minneapolis to Mexico City that departed at 9 AM Central Time. The problem is my tummy and I were on Eastern Time. By the time we were up in the air and food service began, it was going on 11 AM for me. I ate my breakfast several hours earlier in the Sky Club; a second breakfast was not what I was looking for.
Then the simply lovely Delta flight attendant told me there were three choices. (Also, when I say “simply lovely,” I mean it. She provided great Delta service and was a joy to be around.)
- An omelet – sigh
- Some oatmeal – sigh
- A cheese plate – errr, what!
I suddenly had a chance for a light lunch option with wine and cheese – sweet. I have a shot of the meal as a featured image in the post but I know sometimes it is hard to see it as the blog kinda zooms in on the photo – so if you want to see it full screen you can use this link to take a look.
Everything was simply nummy and perfect!
The flatbread was great with the side jelly and bites of the sharper cheeses. The apples and oranges were fantastic with the softer cheeses. The grapes were ripe and crisp. The raisins with the almonds were a treat as well (to be 100% fair, the almonds were a little chewy but that is reaching for something tiny to gripe about). Even the pomegranate seeds were a refreshing crunch paired with my last bites.
Having a croissant on the side for what remained left me very satisfied and wanting nothing more.
I wish Delta would allow, when you are close to meal time changes, to have the opportunity in advance to choose from either the breakfast or lunch menus but until or when that happens (or likely not) I am very pleased to see this cheese plate option on any of my flights. – René

But when will ALL airlines learn that not everyone eats cheese!
There was a non-cheese option. Not sure what you’re on about.
Perhaps the “ALL airlines” referenced carriers other than Delta.
RENE interesting they have used the addition of a third choice to add daypart variety!
Michael – they do realize not everyone eats cheese and have two other options.
Glad to read that the food was simply nummy in your tummy.
@Brutus – Embracing my inner Pooh Bear 🙂
Last week they had only the Chia oatmeal(breakfast) left at my seat…in a box too sweet! Lunch was Grilled Chicken ,roasted (hard root) veggies or an impossible burger… Of course they ran out of chicken by the third row and not a fan of the fake burger so had the undercooked veggies but the butternut salad was good..My first on-board lunch in over 2 years and disappointing.. was told when going to the West Coast more vegan options are put on-board but they may want to re-think that???
I’m sorry that you disliked the chia oatmeal. I had it twice before the fruit & cheese became an option (on the same menu which offers quiche) and LOVED it both times. I’ll admit to having a sweet tooth but I found the balance of the flavor and texture of cut oats versus the add-ons to be just right.
I had it 3 weeks ago and enjoyed a bonus. I used my Delta Amex companion certificate to bring the missus and my/our Platinum Medallion upgrades confirmed for both outbound segments at 5 days. I enjoyed the plate thoroughly and she found the quiche so filling that she donated her fruit bowl to me. Her quiche came with the identical fruit bowl. I’m normally not a kiwi fruit person but it really worked against the citrus medley, even at 36,000 feet.
