Shots fired! Avelo Airlines takes aim at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in a billboard advertisement.
The ultra-low-cost carrier launched operations in April 2021 from quaint, in-city Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), which many travelers simply call “Burbank.” (We rode Avelo’s first two passenger revenue flights!) It’s since added several destinations and another hub: Tweed New Haven Airport (TVN).
But in Southern California, LAX is the airport that passengers love to hate. It’s a pain to access. Traffic is awful (and that’s on a good day). The place is perpetually under construction.
LAX can truly be a nightmare.
Burbank is a considerably smaller airport (by about 100 gates). It’s located in the San Fernando Valley (which added a 747 area code — something fun for us AvGeeks). And it has a quaint charm about it.
In fact, I know people who live in Beverly Hills — which is closer to LAX than BUR — and fly out of Burbank because it’s so much easier than dealing with LAX. True story.
And Avelo is well aware that dealing with LAX can be an unnerving experience. That’s how they decided to get snarky.
This billboard is currently perched at the southwest corner of Topanga Canyon Blvd. and Sherman Way in Canoga Park, California.
Now, Avelo certainly isn’t perfect. It charges for darn near everything. So, that might make you anxious. But I certainly appreciate seeing the airline spread some love for its West Coast hub.
Given that pretty much everyone in Los Angeles is in therapy for something, the ad is pretty spot on.

Boss Tweed has an airport named after him? The reach of Tammany Hall is vast.
