Disclaimer: This flight was at the very end of December 2019 as part of my, and my “BRU boys”, Delta elite mileage run to keep my Diamond status with Delta for 2020.
With that, on to the review:
I have to say it was a little strange to go from a British Air lounge to board our Delta flight but once onboard all was right in my Delta “fan boy” centered brain. 🙂
These Delta One seats are old. Many flyers can’t stand them. I have enjoyed them for years and prefer them over many other designs.
But their days are numbered and not just due to COVID. Delta has begun to replace these old classic Delta One seats with new more semi-private ones. Honestly, I was hoping to be on one of the converted birds for at least one of our flights but that did not happen.
Even though we were departing at 10:45AM Brussels time the passenger right on the starboard side of the jet choose to drift off to sleep as soon as we were up in the air.
I reviewed the then new-ish Delta One headphones a while back that replaced the much criticized LSTN ones and was happy to toss them into the overhead and use my Noise Hush Bluetooth go to headphones. While the entertainment choices are plentiful, these old screens have seen better days.
The one thing ALL Delta One seats lack is storage. These old ones have zero usable space. The new Delta One Suites are almost as bad. For all of Delta’s innovation – storage never has been addressed.
Delta, before takeoff, sends the head purser by with a menu and choice of OJ, a mimosa or sparkling wine. Here is what the choices were for this flight:
I had used the Fly Delta App to pre-order to select the Grilled Beef Tenderloin (my go to choice when offered).
Once near cruising altitude nuts and wine service began. Do notice I choose the shorter water glass for both water and wine as the taller ones tend to be less stable (you simply have to ask).
After that soup, salad and appetizer course. All selections are served on plastic trays but I remove them as you do have a table cloth presented as well. Each item was quite good and I am always impressed with Delta First Class and Delta One meals.
Another impressive steak by Delta. The consistency of the catering, no matter where I am in the world, is something I always respect.
I did not choose all 3 dessert options (I could have if there was enough as many were asleep at this points), and the cheese plate was my choice (the other two were my seat mates selection).
Service during the flight was acceptable but not overly attentive. Not to judge NYC crews over others but let’s just say if I have a choice of non-NYC crews I will take them. Just before landing a hot sandwich was presented. Not my favorite but flavors were good.
Overall another solid Delta One experience and a nice way to do an elite year end mileage run. Working on this review it did make me really long for the day COVID is gone and we can again enjoy trips like this.
Next up New York to Los Angeles – a premium route for Delta. But was it a premium experience? Stay tuned! – René
