During my several decades of travel, never once had I said, “this piece of airline food is the best thing I’ve ever tasted!”

That changed during a flight last month.

Berry, Berry Good

My wife, daughter, and I had an 8:30 AM departure last month to visit family in Fargo. Given the time change from Pacific to Central, we’d essentially miss lunch.

So we perused the Delta Flight Fuel menu.

The Flight Fuel menu in December 2019.

Our choices were limited to a Honey Maple Turkey Breakfast Sandwich or the Protein Box, given that our flight’s pre-9:00 AM scheduled departure time.

We’re big fans of the Protein Box’s sister snack, the Tillamook Cheese & Fruit plate, which is available on select flights departing after 9:00 AM local time. We decided to give the Protein Box a whirl.

This has one less cheese (no smoked gouda) than the Cheese & Fruit plate. Almonds aren’t included — but given Delta serves them as complimentary inflight snacks, that wasn’t a big deal.

The Protein Box also includes an egg, strawberry, and sunflower seed butter, and muesli snack rounds — which the Cheese & Fruit plate doesn’t. Sadly, the Protein Box doesn’t have a Ghiradelli dark chocolate square.

I paid the $8.99 with my American Express® Gold Card because I had some remaining credit left toward my airline incidentals. A couple of days later, it credited back to my account.

We unwrapped it and were treated to this colorful presentation:

We figured the strawberry would be small and underwhelming. But the darn thing was huge. (More on that in a few minutes.)

I’m not a hardboiled egg person, so my wife enjoyed that part of the snack. The Colby Jack and Sharp Yellow Cheese were very good, as usual. So were the grapes.

Cheeses, grapes, a strawberry, egg, and whole grain museli snacks are served in the Delta Air Lines Flight Fuel Protein Box premium snack.

The sunflower creamy butter was quite tasty. It wasn’t my first time having sunflower butter but this was exceptional. It really added some flavor to the otherwise bland-ish whole-grain muesli rounds.

My wife’s eyes lit up when she took a bite of the giant strawberry.

“This could be the best strawberry I’ve ever had,” my wife. I tried it — and was amazed how good the strawberry tasted. A month later, we’re still talking about that strawberry.

Tastiest. Strawberry. Ever.

I know taste buds are affected by air travel. So bravo to the person who selected the strawberries for Delta’s Protein Box!

Overall, we were quite pleased with the Protein Box. We’ll definitely order it again if we’re on an early morning flight offering premium snacks.

If you have an American Express Platinum consumer or business card, and/or the American Express® Gold Card, remember to choose your preferred airline for the incidental credit. And if Delta’s your selection, use some of it on a Protein Box (or two or three 🙂 ). Or if you don’t have an Amex Platinum or Gold card, remember that Delta inflight food and beverage purchases receive a 20% statement credit when purchased with an eligible Delta American Express card.

Have You Tried Delta’s Protein Box?

It looks good, but do you really think that the box had 26g of protein? The egg has about 6g, and the cheeses are around 6g/oz. In the pictures, it does appear that there is much more than an ounce of cheese. The sunflower seed butter probably has a few grams, and the fruit and snack rounds probably have a couple more grams, but it does not seem like the total would be 26g.
