Los Angeles fire crews on scene after a Delta Air Lines flight returning to LAX for an emergency landing purportedly dumped fuel — near two elementary schools in the city of Cudahy, CA.
KTLA News reports approximately 20 patients at Park Avenue Elementary are being treated for skin irritation. UPDATE, 1:23 PM PST: KTLA says the number is now 28 patients.
UPDATE, 3:00 PM PST: KTLA’s Sara Welch reports 44 patients — including 31 at Park Avenue Elementary — in the area were treated for eye and skin irritation.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says the flight was DL89, a 777-200 en route to Shanghai. Tom Podolec Aviation writes the plane experienced engine failure on departure.

According to the LA County Fire Department, 70 firefighters are on scene.
Given the plane was set to travel such a long distance and suffered an emergency, it obviously had to dump a lot of fuel. It’s unfortunate it was in such a populated area.

@Ariel Kayne: Not sure but a news report said some cars had a coating of “diesel” (their word) — but probably meant jet fuel.
