Delta Air Lines just made a quiet but significant change to its 20-minute bag guarantee—and it could cost you easy SkyMiles if you’re not paying attention.
For years, Delta has offered 2,500 SkyMiles to passengers whose checked bags don’t hit the carousel within 20 minutes of arrival. It’s been one of those underrated perks: I know frequent travelers who check bags regularly and rack up enough miles from this alone for award flights.
A nasty rumor several years ago said Bags on Time was going away. (We irredeemable bloggers and the rumors we hear. We’re the worst!) Thankfully, that never happened.
That’s the good news.
Here’s the bad news: Delta has dramatically shortened the window to file a claim. You now have just two (2) hours after arrival to submit it. It used to be about two days.

In other words: if you don’t act quickly, those miles are gone—no second chances the next day.
Two days may have been generous. But cutting it to two hours is a big shift. (We’re going to slap this with a #KeepDescending.)
I usually submit claims during the ride home from the airport or on the way to a hotel. You may want to set an alarm so you don’t forget. There have definitely been times I remembered a day later—that’s no longer going to cut it.
You can submit a claim here: Delta Bags on Time guarantee.
Final Approach
Delta’s Bags on Time feature is still there—but it’s no longer quite as forgiving. Not only do baggage handlers need to be quick — but so do you.
