Let me begin this review with a few disclaimers. First, this was a back to back to back American Express FHR stay using one of my card credits then next one of my wife’s card credits and lastly one of my other card credits. The terms of these say you will not get all the perks if you do this and that was in fact the case. While I did get the 3x$300 statement credits only the first night qualified for the $100 hotel credit. In fact, the staff shared that had I also used Chase THE EDIT (similar to the Amex program) I then too would only have qualified for one single credit not a number of them even though they were from two card programs.
Next up I want to disclose that I did advise THE ONE that I was a travel blogger (when they sent the stock Email if I had any requests before my stay) and they did extend to me a complementary dinner one night during my stay. The meal was one of the best I have had in my life and I will break that down and what I would pay for again if I were the one paying.
OK with disclaimers out of the way let’s get started on this amazing hotel very near the cruise port in Lisbon, Portugal.
The One Palácio da Anunciada Hotel Lisbon is a very unique property and a location I doubt I would have ever picked on my own without the benefit of the Amex Fine Hotels credits (since I tend to be a points / chain hotel stay person). Before I booked this I had held a 3 night stay at a Hilton property in Lisbon and I am so happy I switched.
We were warmly greeted from our Uber and our luggage was taken care of and we were escorted to the check-in area just left of the main entrance. They covered what I have mentioned above and we were told our bags would be delivered to our room in a bit and were then escorted to our room and given an overview of the room and what was included. More on the room in a bit.
From the lobby, one floor up, is the heart of the hotel. The bar, breakfast and dinner area as well as access to the open patio and spa.
Included each day as part of our stay was breakfast and it was lovely. More on that also in a bit. First more history of the hotel.

Considering how young the USA is compared to just about everywhere else on Earth it is easy to forget the amazing history of Europe. This hotel was once the home of a prominent Lisbon resident and when The One took over the building was in a very sad state as you can see from a few of the photos above. The hotel, in almost every corridor, has more reminders of the painstaking work it took to bring this home back to glory – and they have done an amazing job. Now on to our king room:
The room was fine and the bed was soft. Everything worked as expected. Amex Fine Hotel mentions an upgrade if available but we were given a room with a lower green courtyard view that was less than inspiring. I did like the soft touch of robes and slippers – something I always ask for if not provided onboard my NCL cruises.
As mentioned breakfast, each day, was included and it was very good. Unlimited fresh squeezed orange juice as well as unlimited ordering from a menu rather than a buffet. The food quality was top notch and I looked forward to breakfast each day. Now let’s review the grounds including the pool area:
The temps in late November were cool and the pool itself was VERY cold and the seating is a bit different that the stock hotel photos on their site. The courtyard itself was lovely and very relaxing and if you look closely you will see the hotel has a small garden where they grow their own herbs – lovely. There were also no pigeons anywhere for one very interesting reason. They employ of falconer!
We were told the falconer has two Eagles that, each day, fly around the hotel and do an outstanding job of scaring away the pigeons and even sometimes feasting on them. The sparrow population seems less impressed with these amazing birds.
One of the biggest highlights of the stay was a dinner that the hotel provided to us for free, including drinks, to add to my review. Without reservation it was truly one of the best meals I have ever had. Take a look:
From the scallop appetizer to the Iberian Pork – every bite was a pure delight. It was so good I would go back, even if not staying, and have the pork again. Desert was light but equally amazing:
This “comped” meal was not cheap but here is the funny thing – had I received the 3x$100 from the Amex nights I would have likely ordered this anyway to use the credits. Again if I have the chance to stay here again I will dine here again.
Overall this was a simply lovely stay and a nearly 90% savings over list price using 3 different Amex cards and reservations to pay for the 3 night stay. The property is elegant, the staff are amazing, the food is to die for and the location is very near the cruise port. THE ONE is one to remember and I hope you have a chance to check it out next time in Lisbon! – René
