Are Centurions Worth the Effort Anymore at the Mexico City Airport T1?

The image shows a hallway with a large blue banner displaying information about the location of The Centurion® Lounge by American Express at AICM Terminal 1 International. The text is in both Spanish and English, indicating that the lounge is now located beyond the security filters, near boarding gate 23. The hallway has a red and white wall on the right and a framed certificate on the left. There are also two illuminated signs with symbols above the banner.

Well, this has been an interesting journey so far.

I did not get to have breakfast in the American Express Centurion lounge in Atlanta and after a pleasant flight and a just OK lunch I have found that my bags are following me from Mexico City T2 to T1 where my Air France flight is set to depart from (phew).

Now it was time to enjoy some quality time and a massage at the Centurion T1 that I reviewed just over a year ago. But as you can see from the photo above we could not enter from the non-secure side as before. No worries right?

Since we did not have any bags to check we did not have to wait for the Air France desk to open up (3 hours before departure) and made our way through security and to the now temporary tiny Centurion check-in desk. We were on a connecting ticket so entering should not be subject to any entrance rules – but we were.

We were told that (for some made up reason) we could only enter 4 hours before our flight and we were 5 hours out.

The image shows a crowded airport terminal with many people sitting and standing, some with luggage. There are digital screens displaying flight information and advertisements. The ceiling has bright lights, and the area is bustling with travelers.

Thanks Amex! I am so valuing paying mega bucks for my card(s) to see your lounge reps making up random rules* here in Mexico City. As a point of reference I have been any number of times to the T2 club and never ever been turned away with a connecting ticket even with a very long layover (This visit was well before summer 2026 new rules are to be implemented).

After the walk of shame and wandering off to find a somewhat quite-ish gate to sit we made our way back to the lounge and were finally admitted. The lounge, or should I say temporary lounge, is very tiny. Take a look:

A modern cafe interior with several tables and teal chairs. People are seated at some tables, engaged in conversation or using their phones. A large TV screen on the wall displays a person speaking. The decor includes wooden paneling, soft lighting, and floral arrangements on the tables. An exit sign is visible on the wall.

The image shows a cozy lounge area with a bar in the background. There are several chairs and tables, with a few people sitting and engaging in various activities. A woman is seated on the left, looking at her phone with a drink on the table. A blue jacket is draped over a beige sofa in the foreground. The bar is well-stocked with bottles and has a TV screen displaying a program. Green plants are placed on a shelf above the bar. There are signs on the walls, including an emergency exit sign. The lighting is warm and inviting.

A woman with long hair is sitting on a gray couch in a modern, warmly lit room with wooden decor. She is wearing a white and pink patterned top and smiling at the camera. In the background, there are other people sitting and talking, with hanging spherical lights and wooden partitions adding to the ambiance. A suitcase is visible next to the couch.
Lisa is clearly not impressed with this temporary lounge 😉

That’s it. All of it. No showers. No spa. No massage room. Nothing. I did not ask when the remodel would be completed or if any of the old amenities would be back upon completion.

A small pepperoni and ham pizza is on a wooden serving board on a table. There are two glasses of red wine, a can of sparkling water, and two glasses of water. A fork and knife are placed on a napkin to the left. In the background, there is an orange suitcase and a black bag.

We did check in with our Amex Platinum card (2 guests are still currently free at this location) and food and drinks were complementary. The wifi worked and was respectably fast.

A man and a woman wearing black face masks are taking a selfie in an airport terminal. They are surrounded by other travelers, some seated and some standing in line. Behind them, there are signs for gates 26 and 27, and a digital billboard displaying an advertisement. The atmosphere is busy, with people waiting and moving around.

Overall another Amex Centurion disappointment on this journey and it will be interesting to visit this club once all the T1 construction is done and not just on the lounge.

Time to fly Air France again and I was excited to try this new seat. Was it as good as expected? How about the food and service? Stay tuned! – René
