The Best Use of Delta Air Lines Delayed Travel Digital Meal Vouchers – Just What Works?

A table with a variety of appetizers, including tortilla chips, breaded sticks, buffalo wings, and stuffed spring rolls. There are several dipping sauces, including red and white ones. Two large mugs of water with lime slices are also on the table, along with napkins and utensils.

Since it does not look like the USA is going to see an EU261 type rule anytime in the near future we have to hope the airlines do the “right thing” when we are delayed, like providing hotel rooms if you have to overnight (more on this later) as well as meal credits if you are very delayed. I have found, over the years, that Delta has been good (if not VERY good) about handing out either printed (as you see below) or digital meal vouchers when issues do come up.

The image shows a Delta Air Lines meal voucher. It includes details such as the date "15DEC25," a validity time until 11 PM on "16DEC25," and a note that gratuity is not included. The voucher is for a dinner valued at USD 12.00. It mentions that the voucher is issued due to late-arriving equipment and is to be billed to Delta Air Lines. The voucher includes instructions for vendors to submit original vouchers with receipts within 180 days of the issue date. Some personal information is redacted.

I was handed a few after endless delays on the way home from my recent NCL Viva cruise when flights were delayed by over 6 hours resulting in a need to overnight at the airport as well as the next day my flight having mechanical issues delaying the flight by almost 5 hours resulting in yet another missed connection and then even my last rebooked flight was late by a number of hours. It was not Delta’s finest moment over a number of days.

The image is an announcement from Delta Air Lines offering complimentary meal vouchers due to a delay. It states that the vouchers are for food and non-alcoholic beverages, but may not be accepted for onboard purchases. The Delta and SkyTeam logos are at the top.

This image shows a digital meal voucher with a QR code. The voucher is valued at $12.00 USD and must be redeemed by December 16, 2025. It includes partially obscured credit card information, such as a Mastercard number ending in 7588, an expiration date, a CVC code, and a billing zip code of 60173. The voucher is labeled as "1 of 2."

With the paper ones you are somewhat limited what you can do with them and for us we used them (you can combine them btw) for dinner in Detroit Airport. But we also, over the days of issues, got some of the digital coupons / credit card ones as well. Since we have Sky Club access we really did not “need” to eat in the airport so what to do with them?

The image shows a screenshot of a Starbucks app interface. At the top, there is a Starbucks logo with the word "Starbucks" below it. The screen displays a "History" section with "Recent activity" listed. It shows a reload transaction of $10.00 to a card ending in 9324, dated December 15. The time on the device is 10:12, and there are icons indicating Wi-Fi, signal strength, and battery level at the top right.

It is no great secret that for a long time now you can use these digital credit cards to load into your Starbucks account, but there is a limitation that you can only load $10 and thus you are leaving $2 behind as most of these vouchers are $12 each. So is there a better option? Yes!

The image shows a digital interface for purchasing gift cards. At the top, there is a search bar labeled "Search gift cards" with options to filter by "eGift Card," "Physical Card," and "Category." A banner advertises year-round savings for DashPass members, offering up to 10% off select digital gift cards. Below, there is a section titled "Trending Gift Cards" featuring various options, including a DoorDash eGift Card ranging from $5 to $500, a Visa Gift Virtual Account for $105.95, and a Zift eGift Card for $200. Each card is labeled with its price and delivery method.

The image shows a confirmation screen for a completed order of a DoorDash eGift card. It indicates that the gift card, valued at $12.00, has been sent. The order was completed on Sunday, December 14 at 4:08 PM PST. There is a red button labeled "View Gift Card." The payment was made using a MasterCard, and the transaction time is noted as 6:08 PM. There is also an option to resend the gift card and a button for purchasing more gift cards.

One of the best options is to open up your DoorDash app and use that to spend the vouchers. Why?

The image shows a digital gift card selection interface. At the top, there are logos of various brands like Amazon, Adidas, and Chuck E. Cheese. The right side has a yellow section with the text "Zift - Zillions of Gifts" and "HAVE FUN!" with a note about exchanging eGifts. Below, there are options for gift card amounts: $25, $50, $75, $100, and a custom option, with a red arrow pointing to the $25 option. At the bottom, there are different design options for the gift card.

Not only can you load DoorDash itself but you can buy an almost endless amount of other gift cards and you can use them for the full $12.

The image shows a checkout page for a "Gift Card Store." It includes a summary of a digital gift card purchase for $12.00, addressed to "Rene" from "Rene Delambert." The subtotal and total both show $12.00. There is an option to enter promo codes. The section below is titled "Digital delivery," indicating that the gift card will be sent after checkout, with options to send it via "Text" or "Email."

Want to buy a Taco Bell gift card and then load that into your Taco Bell App? No problem.

The image shows a digital interface for purchasing gift cards. At the top, there are options to search for gift cards, redeem them, and filter by physical card, category, and occasion. Below, there is a blue Best Buy eGift Card displayed, with a price range of $5 to $500. A red label indicates a 10% discount. The card is available for digital delivery.

Same goes for Subway and other. Maybe you don’t want a food credit then there are also other gift cards inside the DoorDash app to consider. Either way this is one of the best options, to me, to lock in full value that you can spend when you want to well after your day of travel. – René
