"Stuttgart airport, Germany - August 20, 2011: A Delta Air Lines Boeing 767-300(ER) is taking off to Atlanta. Delta Air Lines is the world's largest airline with some 716 planes and 111 million passengers in 2010. The airline's main hub is at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. There's a daily flight connection from Stuttgart to Atlanta."

The Minnesota Vikings played themselves out of this year’s postseason — but there’s still some excitement in the land of Skol. (In addition to JJ McCarthy’s evolution as a quarterback.)

According to Fox News, the team’s chartered Delta Air Lines 767-300 (yes, a Boeing), destined for Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), sustained a maintenance issue and returned to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP). FlightAware data indicates the flight reached a cruising altitude of 37,000 before heading back to the Twin Cities.

The image is a flight path map from FlightAware showing a route over parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. The path starts and ends in Minneapolis, marked as MSP, and forms a triangular shape extending southeast towards Madison, Wisconsin, and then southwest towards Iowa before returning to Minneapolis. The map includes city labels like Minneapolis, Madison, and Milwaukee, and state labels for Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. This was the Minnesota Vikings' charter flight headed to Newark

The team is slated to play the New York Giants on Sunday at 1:00 PM Eastern. The Vikes and Giants have won a combined eight games this year. (The Vikings are responsible for six of them.)

“Shortly after departing, the team plane experienced mechanical issues that required a return to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The team will board a second plane momentarily and is now expected to arrive at Newark International Airport later tonight,” a team spokesperson told Fox News.

The team boarded another 767-300 and is en route to Newark as of this post. They’ll get in late Saturday night.

No injuries or anything like that were reported. (Which is shocking, considering the darn team can’t stay healthy for more than five minutes.)

Yes, mechanical issues like this happen every day across the aviation world. The reason I’m writing about this is because it involves a high-profile sports team and it gives me an excuse to talk about the Vikings. Skol! 😉
