Surprising: Delta Air Lines is Mailing Out New Metal Elite Million Miler Luggage Tags!

I have to admit I am both pleasantly surprised and rather impressed. The other day I started getting e-mail that a UPS package was set to be delivered to my home in the coming days. Now I get a bunch of these “phishing” emails every day and I knew I did not have any package on the way from UPS so I just dumped the e-mail.

Then days later I got another round of emails that it was out for deliver and I should expect delivery between 2:30-4:40PM. Hummm…. I I carefully opened the e-mail and grabbed the tracking number and went directly to UPS.com and punched it in and yes, a package was in fact on the way. Here is what arrived:

I opened it up to find a note from Mr. Ed (the Delta CEO) and two shiny new million miler luggage tags.

Now keep in mind, I am at about 1.6 million miles with Delta and got my first set of million miler tags years ago but the original ones were cheap plastic from China.

These are something different. They are in fact metal and embossed with both my name and the year I first joined Delta Sky Miles (or maybe in was the year I joined NWA I am not 100% sure).

Here is the thing about these tags – unlike the recent new metal tags Delta is allowing everyone to request (who is an elite) I did not ask Delta to send me these unless they were just auto sent when I requested my personalized Gold Medallion tags. The letter included in the box seems like a rather generic one for anyone who just crossed this level and I think it could be used inside of 2 MM and so on.

So will I pop these onto my travel bag? You betcha I will as even now as a lowly Gold Medallion I am constantly thanked by Delta folks for being a million miler thus clearly the company wants me, the personnel, to know this matters.

Why am I adding these “cow bells” to my bag. Unlike some who simply don’t get it that these kinds of tags do matter in small ways. For example a flight attendant may say:

  • “Overheads are full (at the gate)” but then see MM tag and says I am sure we can find space.
  • “You must put that under your seat” but then sees MM tag and then overhead is just fine.
  • “You need to stay in this line” but then sees MM tag and says “please follow me this way”

And so on and so on. There are lots of tiny things where reps have discretion in ways that can make your travel just a little bit better and if Delta wants me to show off my clanky cow bell “bling” I am happy to do so.

Did you get a new set of million miler tags as well? – René

I ordered the custom Diamond tags and received the same MM tags in the mail yesterday. I requested no name on the custom DM tags so it appears my MM tags were done the same way without my name? Any idea when custom tags will be delivered?

@Jim – I have no idea but since these are starting to send my guess is we will not have to wait too much longer. I guess no name is better for eBay resale unless you put your name in as “Taylor Swift” mabye? 😉

This isn’t a big deal, but I have had my MM (16 year PM with 1.8m) status only recognized once while on board. I’ve witnessed others get recognized but not sure why I never do!

      Mr. John,

As a FA for Delta, I would like to thank you for your loyalty. Sometimes we get busy and can’t acknowledge those that are so important to us! If I see you (and your MM bag tags) on one of my flights, it would be an honor to say hello and recognize you in person.

(Ps. You will have to fly to S. Africa, S. Korea or Tokyo to be on one of my flights) ✈️

There’s an excuse to fly to South Africa, South Korea, or Tokyo if I ever heard one, John.

The MM tag IS blazing!!! And your good points re using them are well taken Rene. I am still waiting for my Diamond tags and Now the MM tags.
I put a ghost like email on my Diamond tags instead of entire name.
Woohoo!!!! 25k away from 2MM! Thank you for sharing this Update. Have fun and be well

Hey Rene and team, as always thanks for the info and the blog. I actually logged into my account and noticed the option to request and customize both the 1MM and Diamond Medallion tags. You can select how you want your name included on the task i.e. only first name and last name initial, etc. They said it will come in 4 – 6 weeks.

@AI R – Neat! I have not looked since my request weeks ago. That does explain why my new MM tags arrived!

I ordered my 2 MM tags and hope to see them soon! At the new way of granting us miles for our flights I will probably never get to 3 MM! I got to 2MM last July and since then with at least 40 flights I’m only at 25,000 miles towards the 3MM status!

I’m at 2.7 MM and also am fairly certain I’ll never get to 3MM. I only travel for pleasure now as I retired a few years back. I’ve been collecting miles since 1990 according to Delta!

    Got em this afternoon!!
I just looked now and wow, I’m 30 years, 1999, since signing up for the new Skymiles as all my old Skymiles “Delta Air Lines Frequent Flyer Program” got wiped out some years before as those miles DID expire. ( 80’s-90’s)
This metal recognition tag is a nice gesture by Delta, much better than those cheap plastic ones sent a few years ago which broke and cracked immediately.

Mine should be waiting for me at home as I received confirmation from UPS that my package was delivered from a vendor “CARD PERSONALIZATION SOLUTIONS” which must be the company making and shipping these for Delta. I requested the personalized DM and MM tags for this year. Big improvement from prior years and the plastic MM tags I’m currently flashing on my bags.

I wonder if anyone has found a silicone backer for the MM and DM metal tags to eliminate the “Cow Bell” effect clanking all the way to the gate? I have seen license plate silicone backers that would work in a small size. Just a thought. Waiting on my 2.5MM custom tags!

“(The) ‘Cow Bell’ effect”! That is hilarious! I admit to being a tag carrier (PlaneTags), commemorative tags from events, etc. You can hear me walking from 20 gates away.

Hey! Who are you calling a “lowly Gold Medallion”? Seriously, your points regarding the tags and how they could be beneficial is well-taken. This is why I now advise my younger relatives to pick an airline and stick with it. When I was young, I spread it all around based on price, destination w/o a connection, etc. Guess what I got for it? Over a million miles spread out between Delta, United, America, and JB. A million miler of all airlines and a master of none! I only went Delta-exclusive in 2017…waaayyy too late to get to a million with them alone. Now, with business travel over for me, I guess I shall remain a humble, lowly Gold Medallion! Honestly, just kidding…
