The Los Angeles metro area is experiencing a major wind and firestorm event, affecting some travel in and out of the area. Delta Air Lines issued a change waiver for passengers traveling through one of four L.A.-area airports:
- Hollywood-Burbank (BUR)
- Los Angeles International (LAX)
- Ontario (ONT)
- Santa Ana/Orange County (SNA)
The waiver is effective for travel taking place from Wednesday, January 8, through Monday, January 12. Tickets must be rebooked by Friday, January 17. Rebooked travel must commence no later than January 17, as well. The end dates are extensions of what was originally announced. Here’s the waiver’s official page on Delta.com.
Any applicable fare differences should be waived, provided you rebook in the originally ticketed cabin of service (i.e., Main Cabin).
Prepare for turbulent rides into and out of the L.A.-area airports. I lost track of how many planes tried landing at Burbank (BUR) on Tuesday, only to divert to LAX, Las Vegas, or Phoenix. The winds (83 MPH gusts!) were simply too high.
The air quality is going to be pretty gross.
Remember that airlines generally don’t pay for any expenses (hotels, meals, ground transport, etc.) if you’re delayed due to weather. I hope you booked with a credit card offering good trip delay coverage or you hold travel insurance. (Or both!)
