When Do Delta MQD Post to Your Account?

When Do Delta MQD Post?

There seems to be some confusion about when Delta Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQD) post to people’s SkyMiles accounts.

Based on the emails and comments we received, as well as social media posts we read, not everyone is up to speed. That’s understandable, given the Medallion program’s overhaul that kicked in last year. So, let’s try to clear up some confusion — and save folks some frustration!

(Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Enrollment may be required for select American Express benefits and offers. Visit americanexpress.com to learn more.)

When Do You Get Delta Flight MQD?

In my experience, Delta air travel MQD (and redeemable SkyMiles) post shortly after a flight lands. There were times when the MQD and SkyMiles hit my account while the flight was still airborne. (See, Delta IT? I know you have some skills in you!)

But what if you bought your Delta flight with a Delta credit card?

That leads us to:

When Do You Get Delta SkyMiles® American Express Card MQD?

Four Delta Amexes allow cardholders to earn MQD based on various spending thresholds per card:

  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
    • Earn $1 MQD for every $10 spent on eligible purchases
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
    • Earn $1 MQD for every $10 spent on eligible purchases
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card
    • Earn $1 MQD for every $20 spent on eligible purchases
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card
    • Earn $1 MQD for every $20 spent on eligible purchases

Those MQD generally post around the same time you meet your spending thresholds. Here are some MQD earnings for my Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card and the purchases for the same period.

Charges on a Delta Amex Reserve Business Card. Delta MQD earnings for money spent on a Delta Amex Reserve Business Card.

Does It Make a Difference If Your Delta Flight Was Paid with Your Delta Amex? Do You Get the MQD Faster?

No and no.

You don’t get your Delta flight MQD until you’ve flown your flight(s). Your MQD will post effective to the date of your trip — not when you bought the ticket.

That’s how it’s been since MQD were introduced about ten years ago.

It does not matter if you bought a ticket with your Delta Amex.

You’ll still get the 10:1 or 20:1 MQD conversion based on however much you spent on your ticket. Those purchases are considered the same as any other Amex purchase (i.e., groceries, streaming subscriptions, utilities, dining, etc). You do earn 3X bonus redeemable SkyMiles for per eligible dollar spent on Delta purchases.

Let’s say you bought a 2025 Delta flight — but purchased it in 2024 with your Delta Amex. You should’ve received the applicable MQD for your Amex purchase. But you won’t get the Delta flight MQD until your respective fights are completed. I know of several people who assumed their 2025 Delta flights purchased In 2024 would count toward their 2025 Medallion status. Sorry to say, but they’re out of luck.

Does the Person Buying the Delta Flight Earn All the MQD?

Here’s another question we heard with some frequency (we’ll paraphrase):

If I buy Delta flights for my family of four, do I get all of their Delta flight MQD because I paid for the ticket?

No. Each passenger earns their own MQD, regardless of who pays for the ticket. (Do you really think most of the “pay for your status to earn it!” and “thin the Diamond herd!” people actually spend their own money on airfare? Heck, no! It’s their employers’ dimes!)

For example, my seven-year-old daughter has earned thousands of MQD during the past five years. (You know, since she became “an adult.”) The little cheapskate hasn’t paid a dime. Conversely, when I pay for my daughter’s tickets using cash, points/miles, vouchers, etc., I don’t earn her MQD.

If you use an eligible Delta Amex to pay for multiple Delta tickets, you’ll receive whatever spending-based MQD you earn — just like you would other purchases.

How Long Does it Take for Delta Partner Flight MQD to Post?

We’ve written about flying Delta partner airlines and crediting those trips to your SkyMiles account. (You can earn better MQD for your airfare.)

Those MQD should post to your Delta account within a few days. It sometimes takes up to a week or two. But make sure to keep paper copies of your boarding passes that have your SkyMiles number printed on them in case something goes whacky.

Final Approach

Because earning MQD on Delta Amexes is relatively new and so many changes took effect in 2024, there’s some confusion about MQD in general. I hope this post helped clear up some of that.

I booked a delta vacation and paid on my Amex delta reserve. All paid posted before end of dec

I received very few MQD for the flights. I did not get credit for Amex (billing cycle has not closed until mid Jan so maybe that’s why) and delta vacation shoes a delta vacation bonus with the MQD from the trip

I’m 18.00 MQD short of next level. My app refreshed yesterday at the same level

Will I get the Amex reserve spend credited to mqd for fy 2024? Will I get same for delta vacations? As both ended on 13/30

18.00 short is frustrating. No way to see delta vacation posting or delta Amex reserve posting as (delta Amex reserve posted on 12/30 to cc. Not pending charge. Posted. Delta vacation paid early December trip finished 12/30)

Dec 30 I returned. I do see delta vacation bonus miles and I see very low MQD for flights. I was expecting Delta Vacations to post MQD. Without that I’m literally 18.00 MQD shy of next level. So I charged on 12/31 and made sure it posted on my charge as of 12/31 1500.00 that I needed to buy anyway on my Amex Delta Reserve

I’m wondering if the Amex Reserve and our the Delta Vacations will count.

If your Amex account shows 12/31/2024, then you should be OK. I’d take screenshots of everything and save it.

Hi Chris, I am Platinum and a Delta Reserve Card holder and hit 14,315 MQDs this year. Based on several EOTF articles, I applied for a Delta Platinum card in late December. By everything I read, the MQD boost of 2500 should post retroactively and get me to Platinum for 2025 as well. Am I correct in this assumption and any idea when the two MQD boosts should post? Thanks for the daily emails, they are great!

Hi, BJ! Per the Reserve Card’s terms and conditions:

MQDs will be deposited within 6 to 8 weeks after an Eligible Card Account is opened, and thereafter every subsequent year within 6 to 8 weeks after February 1 while the Eligible Card Account is open; however, if a New Eligible Card Account is opened during November or December of a Qualification Year, MQDs will be applied to the Qualification Year in which the Card is opened. MQDs earned during a Qualification Year are used to determine qualification for Medallion Status for the subsequent Medallion Year for the Basic Card Member.

Based on that verbiage, I think your 2024 MQD should post no later than late February and count retroactively toward your 2024 status (and get those $14k+ MQD to the $16.5k area, thus getting you PM!). Then, you’ll get another $2,500 MQD Headstart at some point (maybe February or March 2025?) that counts toward 2026 status.

Yes, the process should be fast and simple — especially in this day and age. I won’t be surprised if there are some headaches and hitches involved. Some people are saying Delta and Amex reps told them MQD won’t apply retroactively — but Amex’s own public-facing verbiage says they will. We’ll point out that Delta and Amex reps say stuff like Companion Certificates will be taken away from your SkyMiles account if you cancel an eligible card (we’ve yet to see that happen). I’m not losing sleep.

I applied for and received the Reserve card on December 24 solely to get to Diamond with Headstart. The Headstart MQDs still haven’t posted, but Delta assures me that they will still post for 2024. It took my a long time to get that assurance, and I quoted the policy you listed above before I did. It’s closer that neither Delta nor Alex representatives were well prepared for these questions.

My experience for partner airlines, specifically Korean Air, has been terrible. It doesn’t show up and when try to get the credit, the Delta folks are helpless and have even directed me to contact Korean air even though I bought the ticket on the delta site and it had a cocked of a delta number. It can take a couple of months to show up, if at all.

Do you know why there would be a delay in status updating for 2025 if I elected to rollover my MQMs last year (2024) into MQDs which should have pushed me over to getting Medallion status for 2025? I see my Skymiles card as saying my status ends at the end of January 2025, is that normal to not reflect status until after the previous earned status has expired instead of extending the date as soon as it’s earned?

My guess is that Delta’s IT is having growing pains with all of the retroactive MQD — Delta Amexes, Choice Bennies, etc. Whatever the case: it’s disappointing, frustrating, and not reflective of a premium airline who claims how easy it is to earn status.
