If you’re considering a career as a Delta flight attendant (or are just an airline nerd like many of us), you might be interested in the “Delta Air Lines Flight Attendant Hiring Appearance Requirements Acknowledgement” document.
There’s bad news if you eschew underwear.
“Proper undergarments must be worn but must not be visible,” Delta declares. “Proper” is certainly a subjective term, isn’t it? Plus, who enforces this rule? (No, I’m not volunteering.)
Other interesting notes:
“Athletic type shoes are not permitted.” Okay, I get that Delta wants flight attendants to look professional. I see this as a health issue. I have no problem with flight attendants being comfortable while walking and standing throughout flights.
“Visible tattoos are not permitted and must be covered by clothing or waterproof make-up. Bandages are not suitable for coverage of tattoos at any time.” It seems like everyone has tattoos nowadays. Even I have a tattoo (it honors my late mother). Do you think companies such as airlines will eventually relax their tattoo rules?
On a somewhat related topic, be careful about piercings:
-
A single side-nose piercing with a pinhead stud is permitted. Gold, silver, white pearl, orclear diamond/diamond-like studs only. No other facial or visible body piercings areallowed.
-
A maximum of two earrings per ear are permitted. Earrings may be gold, silver, white pearl,or clear diamond/diamond-like studs only and should be no larger than a dime. No hoopearrings.
-
Ear stretching gauges are not permitted.
Don’t even think about alternating fingernail polish color:
Fingernails must be clean, neat, trimmed and, if polished, chip-free. All nails must be the
same color. No neon colors, multi-color, adornments, glitter, hand-painted designs or
airbrushed nails permitted.
Frankly, as long as no one smells and makes an effort to look presentable, I really don’t care how many piercings, tattoos, or fingernail polish colors flight attendants have. If they’re competent during an emergency and their service is good during a flight, that’s what matters.
And unless I missed it, there’s no verbiage about what kinds of pins flight attendants can wear on their lapels.
What do you think about the appearance requirements?
Delta (and other airline) employees, are there personal appearance rules for your positions?

The fact that it even has to be stated that someone should wear underwear is a sad reflection of the state of society. When I was growing up, nobody would ever consider doing anything different. Therefore I fully support Delta in stating this requirement.
Also as a note of cultural sensitivity, there are some religions (including mine) that forbid looking at pictures like the one at the top.

The option to follow replies should be there now. Thanks.
