It’s Back? The Delta CRJ-200 Flies Again

An Endeavor Air CRJ-200 (tail number N8891A) operating as a Delta Connection flight is seen from the Delta Sky Club at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD).

Were the reports of Delta Air Lines no longer using CRJ-200s in its system greatly exaggerated?

The commuter jets so many of us loved to hate were phased out of Delta’s system late last year. Then came news that Delta Connection would again operate 50-seat regional jets — except those are CRJ-550s, which are pretty much spiffy versions of CRJ-700s.

But like a phoenix from the ashes, the Delta Connection CRJ-200 flies again.

From what we can tell, there’s only one CRJ-200 operating a Delta-marketed route: Detroit (DTW) to Alpena (APN). SkyWest operates the route. The plane apparently was cooling its heels in Tucson for the past several months before ferrying to Detroit on Tuesday. (You may recall that Alpena was caught up in some drama a few years ago when it looked like the Michigan city would lose non-stop service to Detroit.)

But the morning flights from DTW to APN show (at least on the Delta app) that CRJ-200s will fly it for at least the next several days. It’s normally operated by CRJ-700s.

As René told me, the Delta CRJ-200s are like “Bob” in the movie What About Bob?

This FlyerTalk thread discussed the topic, as did this Patreon post.

Perhaps this is temporary — or maybe a few, limited routes will once again be served by the aircraft dubbed “Satan’s Chariot.”

We contacted Delta for comment and will update this post as necessary.

What does this say about Delta and SkyWest that it can’t find an adequate replacement plane? Talk about an insult to passengers. There’s no spare 700, 900, or some other kind of plane at a major hub like Detroit? I hope they at least did a deep clean on a plane that has been sitting in a junk yard for months.

I’m not happy about it either. However it actually speaks very highly about their inventory management if every good plane is in service and the only spare ones are those that nobody wants to be in.

You can delete this after looking into this but the “Follow-up comments” button is not working properly for me again. I don’t get an e-mail asking me to confirm that I want to subscribe.

Thanks. The other weird thing is that I’m only getting your daily updates now, not the original posts when you send them. I’ve tried to resubscribe but it doesn’t make a difference.
