Cue the Psycho theme music: are CRJ-200s — known as the Devil’s Chariot — coming back to Delta Air Lines?

Deep breath: nope!

Delta Connection will soon fly Bombardier CRJ-550 aircraft configured with 10 First Class, 20 Comfort+ and 20 Main Cabin seats. The 19 planes — based on the CRJ-700 — will be operated by SkyWest. (Some Delta insiders tipped us off to this last month but our requests for comment went unanswered.) Exit row fans: those seats are located in Comfort+.

The seat map is now live on Delta’s website and Fly Delta app.

AirlineGeeks notes that SkyWest CCO Wade Steel told an earnings call’s participants that “We anticipate the first CRJ-550 to be flying for one of our major partners during the summer months.”That sure sounds like it’ll be Delta, based on everything we now know.

This is good news for passengers in smaller markets. Enilria theorizes the planes will likely operate Essential Air Service routes.

Some service is better than no service

Delta caving into Sky West. That’s what this is about. You have markets that previously were exclusively CRJ-200s and for a year or so have been 700s and 900s. Some of those markets are full every flight. But Sky West doesn’t want to staff two flight attendants and doesn’t want to provide service, especially to comfort plus. Reducing seats from 70 to 50 and eliminating 1 flight attendant means only first-class passengers — if they’re lucky — will get any kind of service on flights of 45 minutes to 1 hour in the Great Lakes and Midwest. Even first-class routinely doesn’t get pre-departure beverages and often wine and beer is not catered in sufficient number for an in-flight service. This is really unfortunate. Delta should have held the line and ditched Sky West. Endeavor and Republic, the other two carriers for Delta Connection, do a much, much better job than Sky West.

So? It’s a testament to the product. It works and others follow suit. ‍♂️

How dare you, Greg. Delta surely invented it — United just didn’t know it years ago. Kind of like the A321neo… 😉
