We received several comments and emails about Delta Air Lines SkyMiles Platinum and Diamond Medallions not being able to select their Choice Benefits for the 2023 SkyMiles year — which expires today.

Some people told us they’re not able to choose any 2023 benefits. What’s up?

Technical Difficulties?

Is it possible that Delta’s website is acting up? Sure. Stranger things have happened.

But it’s maybe something else.

User Error: When Did You Earn Your Status?

So, I’ll use myself as an example.

While driving to pick my daughter up from school earlier this afternoon, I thought, Wait — did I remember to select my 2023 Choice Benefits?

I checked my email. I performed a search of “(My SkyMiles number) Choice Benefits.”

The last Choice Benefits selection I made was in 2022!

I called Delta and spoke with a great rep named Colin.

I explained that I couldn’t find a record of what my 2023 Choice Benefit selection was and when that was fulfilled. He kindly checked with the SkyMiles desk.

Colin returned and explained the issue: I don’t qualify for 2023 Platinum or Diamond status.

Huh?

I’ll let you in a little behind-the-scenes gossip. When René and I ask each other a question about something that’s already covered here on the site, we always dryly respond, “You should read the blog.” (Even though we have like, 8,000 posts and pages.)

a screenshot of a chat

Welp. I should read the blog.

You see, I intentionally started 2023 at Gold Medallion — and wrote about it.

I apparently forgot all about that and being Gold for a spell starting in 2023. (This is always my extremely busy time of the year!) I thought I was Platinum since 2022.

Alas, no.

A couple of months into 2023, I hit my MQD Waiver (may that rest in peace), had the prescribed MQM (pour one out for those, too), and earned Platinum Medallion status — for 2024.

So, even though I achieved Platinum status during 2023, that didn’t entitle me to 2023 benefits. Just 2024 Choice Benefits — which I have until January 31, 2025 to select.

Perhaps a few other folks were like me and blanked out part of last year.

I don’t see anyone else losing their minds on Twitter (X, whatever), Reddit, or FlyerTalk over not being able to select Choice Benefits. If there were a system-wide problem, you know darn well those places would lit up like a Christmas tree.

Again, nothing definitive — just throwing it out there.
