The New Blog Launch, Are Drink Packages Worth It?, Tips on Tipping and What’s Next?

What a week! Let me tell you launching a new blog is not easy. The folks at BoardingArea, as well as my great friend Chris, have worked so hard to get this new adventure on the high seas launched almost without a hitch. I can not thank them enough.

Great progress has been made this short week but more is to come. Stand by for some updates to the home page in the next week or two as well as a Frequent Floaters gift shop with lots of “FF” swag to show off.

a pair of hands holding drinks with straws

If you have been missing blog posts from the legend himself Marshall Jackson or MJ you are not the only one. He shared his thoughts on the recent changes to Royal Caribbean’s elite drinks perks per day and it made me as an NCL top elite feel a bit dry sad to say.

a paper money with a picture of a man on it

Our man, who is onboard a ship right now, gave us Frequent Floaters some things to think about when it comes to tipping those who work so hard to make our vacations at sea amazing. It really is not as simple as tossing some cash on the bed before we leave the cabin (it made me think).

More updates.

For now, on Sundays, I plan to share the latest “cruise news” I found the most interesting and hopefully it will ping your interest as well. Sunday on the blog is still a work in progress and it may become a cruise deals day post or perhaps some kind of a combo of news and deals – as I said, developing.

I will end with saying how impressed I am at the large number of readers who have signed up to follow the blog (link here). Between that and the many warm emails and contacts motivates me more than you will know – thank you! – René

I’m looking forward to reading more from this blog. For 10 years I’ve built a healthy stash of FF points and enjoyed traveling the world thanks to those miles, but not until this year have I ever booked a cruise, so I feel like a complete novice when it comes to cruising.

Something I’d love to hear about, are some of the best value activities at different cruise ports. There’s no shortage of activities available for our Alaskan cruise, many of which are expensive, so it would be great to hear from those who have participated which ones were worth it, and which ones are good, but not worth the price.

@Joseph – Thank you and also a great post idea. Beyond what there is to do on the ships I agree it can be confusing what excursions are worth it and what is not. On our last 21 day crossing about half of the ship based events were good and half we wish we had not booked. I will add your idea to my post list!

Value cruiser here! I traveled solo female have and had much more personal experiences with local people than I would have on a ship sponsored excursion (example- Naples, getting to Pompeii. While waiting to catch the local bus outside the cruise dock, the Italians got the one English speaker waiting for the bus to make sure the tourist wasn’t lost. After learning where I wanted to go, the Italians spoke among themselves and found someone going further on the bus line than I and nominated that man to be my babysitter to make sure I got off at the correct stop. You can’t purchase that experience!)
Along with Rene’s beloved Haven (smile) please also include tips on how to maximize the basic all inclusive already paid for on each cruise line.

Is there an article or link here on drinks packages that I missed? I drink ‘a lot’ but wouldn’t even come close to using up a drinks package. If it’s comped, that’s fine … except you have to prepay tips on ‘all those drinks’. If the package was not rolled into the fare, I’d just do the math in order to decide which is the best value.

@jsn55 – Regarding RCL see MJs linked post about elite perks. That said I will be blogging about other lines soon
