Ugh: Are DJs Coming to Delta Sky Clubs?!

What up, party people! Are Delta Sky Clubs about to turn into nightclubs? A recent DJ performance at a Delta airport lounge has some people concerned.

DJs in Delta Sky Clubs

FlyerTalk member “DLmedalliongold” wrote last Thursday, “I’m currently in the [Dallas] Sky Club and they have a DJ booth and are jamming out. Is this new???”

Did you just get a pit in your stomach? I sure did in mine.

Look, I worked side hustles as a DJ. Some of my friends are professional DJs. I love music and a great DJ. But not necessarily inside an airport lounge. I’m all for ambient music and a good time. Although, the noise from a DJ may encourage some people to stop broadcasting their video chats, movies/TV shows, games, or even playing DJ themselves. (Or they’ll turn up the volume.)

FTer “Orange County Commuter” said, “I would be at the desk making a complaint and I would also go to the online complaint form and make a complaint. No we don’t need a DJ.”

“LostInAmerica” added, “The club is supposed to be a respite and relief from the cacophony of the terminal. I thought the loud phone talkers were bad enough…”

“ryw” quipped, “Maybe it’s a new strategy to reduce club over-crowding?”

SUPERTRAVEL, though, played Devil’s advocate: “As a night club blogger, I’d love to have DJ’s {sic} playing in Sky Clubs. Perhaps during Happy Hour only on Thursday & Friday afternoons. Everybody (is) always so grum in the Club. Bring some joy to the room!”

"Let me hear you scream, MSP Sky Club at the F and G concourses!" (©iStock.com/warrengoldswain)

Here’s What DJ Delta Air Lines Says

Don’t start putting your hands up in the air and waving them like you do or don’t care.

A Delta spokesperson told Eye of the Flyer, “Select Delta Sky Clubs offer occasional ‘surprise and delight’ activations for guests. The activations, which can include live music, DJs, specialty food offerings and more, are locally produced and managed by the individual, local Club teams.”

So, it doesn’t sound like DJs (or live music) will be an all-the-time feature of Delta Sky Clubs. (Although, maybe have the Sky Club DJs broadcast on some channel people can access on their mobile devices? Or turn the experience into a silent disco?) I’ve enjoyed the specialty local food and beverage options occasionally offered at clubs.

Other than that, no word on when DJs or live music artists will perform at particular clubs.

I cringe at the idea of pushing over the chocolate chip cookies to make space for a turntable and removing the latte machines for bass speakers. Having a nightclub-style DJ rattling the china and crystal inside is out of bounds for me. The clubs should be a quiet space, in my view.

HOWEVER, I was flying through JFK last summer at went out to the skydeck. At one end of the deck, on the high counter a DJ was playing great soul music. It was just a bit louder than you would expect from background music and was way better than the drone of the jet engines. You could still have a conversation and brought smiles to the guests. I liked it and it was kind of cool.

I have enjoyed the DJ at JFK several times in the past outside on the deck. If you don’t like the music stay inside.
Would like to see it at the other clubs with outside decks !

Oh hell no! I agree that this is a good way to reduce crowding.

Maybe it would surprise and delight on a Saturday afternoon. I’m not sure I would have been delighted during a 4 hour rolling delay spent at the DFW SkyClub a few weeks back.

I do have to give Delta credit for extending the hours of the club during the delay. There were flights to ATL/MSP/BOS that were all delayed past the 7pm closing time for the club. Delta asked the staff to keep the club open until we had all cleared out.

Saturday afternoons would be a great time to have this, since I would never be flying on a Saturday afternoon but rather enjoying family time while not being able to listen to music that’s being imposed on everyone. As I mentioned in another post, it would be great if Delta could figure out a Parallel Reality sound system that allows travelers to hear music individually tailored for them, just as they have figured out a Parallel Reality display.

I was at the main club at DTW a while back and they were playing music and doing tastings for a tequila product.

Not a fan of the music, but if the volume is reasonable, I could shut it out.

Had a DJ at the JFK roofdeck lounge when I was there last month. It was LOUD and really didn’t make it an enjoyable experience for me… All I want is to sip a drink and get some plane spotting in. Ended up needing to wear earplugs.

I’d be fine if I never experienced that again.

Great. Trying to attract more people? At least won’t have to endure before 3 hours before flight. I’ll take old Crown Rooms … Quiet place to get a drink and work.
