Cashback shopping portal Rakuten is running a contest this week giving members the opportunity to win up to $1,000 for referring new members.
Rakuten’s 2022 Big Friend Energy Cash Back Giveaway
Rakuten members can invite friends and family to join the cashback service. Log in to your Rakuten account and then select “Refer & Earn $30+”. You can plug in your contacts’ email addresses and also obtain your personalized invitation link.
Each person you refer who successfully signs up and becomes a Rakuten member counts as one of your entries into the “2022 Big Friend Energy Cash Back Giveaway” drawing. (Not yet a Rakuten member? It’s free to sign up — here’s our registration link. Thank you!)
You can enter up to five times. In other words, if you get five people to sign up for Rakuten, you’ve reached the maximum number of entries.
If snail mail is your preferred way to enter contests, you’re in luck! Per Rakuten:
Entrants may also enter by mailing up to five (5) handwritten 3 x 5 cards with Entrant’s full name, postal address, the email address that corresponds with Entrant’s Rakuten account, and telephone number to Rakuten Sweepstakes, 2022 Rakuten Big Friend Energy Cash Back Giveaway, Rakuten Inc.,160 Spear Street, Suite 1900, San Francisco, CA 94105. All contact information provided must be valid, truthful and current. Entrants will receive one (1) entry for each valid, complete card received. Mail-in entries must be postmarked by August 13, 2022 and must be received no later than August 26, 2022. Envelopes containing multiple entries will be disqualified.

Three prizes are up for grabs:

Winners will be selected via a random drawing and notified around September 15. I confirmed with a Rakuten PR rep that these prizes are awarded as cash; American Express® Membership Rewards® are not an option for this contest.
Earn $30 Per Referral
Even if you don’t win one of the prizes, you can still earn some money. If a referral spends $30 (or more) through Rakuten within three months of signing up, you’ll both a $30 bounty. So, if you refer five people and they each spend $30 through Rakuten, you’ll earn $150. If you refer 10 people and they spend $30, you’ll be $300 richer. (Those earnings can be converted to Amex Membership Rewards points.)
