If you pull up to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport today and see a bunch of Delta Air Pilots staging a protest, here’s what’s happening.
CBS46 reports a number of off-duty Delta pilots dressed in uniform are calling attention to working conditions. The pilots’ complaint is that “the current scheduling practices are putting too much pressure on them. They said the flight schedules are forcing them to fly for long strenuous trips, too often and it causing fatigue.”

Passenger service should not be affected by the demonstration (craftily worded as “informational exercise.”) The news outlet says Delta issued the following statement to them:
This informational exercise by some of our off-duty pilots will not disrupt our operation for our customers. All of our pilot schedules meet or exceed safety requirements set by FAA as well as those outlined in our pilot contract. As we continue to deliver industry leading operational reliability and recover our network, we are also balancing ways to improve schedules for our pilots. All of our people, including our pilots, are working hard to restore our airline and deliver for our customers as we emerge from the pandemic. We are grateful for and proud of their efforts.
As CBS46 notes, airlines furloughed a bunch of pilots during the COVID-19 pandemic. But now that travel is rebounding, there’s a mad dash to fill open pilot jobs. So, it makes sense that pilots may be overworked.
That’s one side of the story. I’m sure there’s another. (Delta employee Facebook page members: please tell us your side in the below Comments section.)
