Updated, March 6, 2022: The Fly Delta app was updated to version 5.8.1 in the iOS App Store. The certificates are showing their currently correct expiration dates.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE
A few readers and I opened our Fly Delta apps Wednesday and discovered some pleasant surprises. Our travel vouchers and Delta Amex Companion Certificates and were seemingly extended again a full year — into 2022!
Reader Dave kindly gave us this data point:
[T]his morning I looked at my certificates after reading your “Delta Diamond Medallion Status EXTENDED” post, and I noticed that my two companion certificates expired 12/31/2022, which would have been great. However, I just checked again, and now both are back to 12/31/2021. It seems like Delta IT is doing some tinkering, and it will be interesting to see where everything ends up.
So I logged on to the Fly Delta app on my iPhone. My Companion Certificates and vouchers for unused tickets were all extended into late 2022. The iPad version also reflected the extended dates.
Whoo-hoo!
Considering Delta extended active and unused Upgrade Certificates through the rest of this year, I figured Delta was in the midst of a “bulk extension” to other products.
I logged on to my profile on Delta.com.
The certificates and vouchers had their “original” 2021 dates. Uh-oh.
So which date is correct?
Fly Delta App Glitch
Sorry. I want you to hear this from a friend.
A Delta spokesperson told us:
A small number of SkyMiles Members who are viewing the 5.8 version of the Fly Delta app for iOS are seeing inaccurate Companion Certificate and Upgrade Certificate expiration dates. We are taking steps to resolve this as soon as possible and apologize for any inconvenience. Members can view correct details at any time by visiting their SkyMiles profiles on delta.com.
So there you have it.
Bob — our Diamond Medallion whose status was inexplicably extended into 2023 — sent me a screenshot from an Android version of Fly Delta. Here’s hoping his status is still extended on Delta.com. (I’ll let you know if it isn’t.)
Final Approach
Would it be nice if Delta extends Companion Certificates and vouchers? Of course. Many countries have travel restrictions in place. The CDC says people should avoid non-essential travel. And vaccine availability seems to vary widely.
But I think we should assume Delta won’t extend them. Hopefully, they’ll surprise us. (Especially because using the Companion Certificate involves actually buying a ticket.)

You are lucky you can see your certificates and vouchers. There has been a glitch on some Delta accounts which one gets an error stating “Oops! We’re sorry. Gift card can not be applicable in ecredit section PMT504029” when trying to view vouchers or certificates. It supposedly only happens if you used a gift card to purchase a flight and then the flight was cancelled and refunded via a voucher. The error has been present for over 9 months in my account. I have made numerous calls to Delta and I even had one of their IT specialists call me to get the details on the error. However, I’ve had no luck in getting in fixed. So…..for a small minority of us we can’t even see the expiration dates….. If there is anyone else out there with this problem you can call a Delta agent and he or she can give you your certificate numbers and expiration dates over the phone. I entered mine into a simple spreadsheet. Then, you have to call them to book and give them the companion cert #, upgrade # or voucher #.
Interesting — thanks for the data point.
@ Brent : …. I had the same problem for as long as I can remember in 2020 – it was very frustrating.
On top of that problem I had another big issue. Whenever I made an award booking, the system would clone the booking complete with the same time stamp etc. but a different booking code. This meant also a double amount of miles would be charged. I had to delete the second (cloned) booking and often the system would not let me do this online with complex International award bookings. Agents plus IT were completely baffled and I even received an email about the issue. But nobody seemed to be able to fix it.
However, when I called at the end of the year about Global Upgrade Certificates and complained for the umptiest time about nothing showing in my account for mostly all of 2020 , I must have been so lucky to get a very dedicated agent, because since the Medallion rollovers at the beginning of the year, the issue seems to have been fixed in my account and everything is showing again.
And no more double award bookings.
So there is hope !
I get an error message when looking for my upgrades in the app. On the website, one shows as “extended” until 8/1/21 (ooooooh, one whole day), another still shows as 7/31/21, and the two that are currently used for a trip show as 12/31/21. So confusing! Hoping the two unused ones eventually reflect 12/31/21.
