SkyRocketing SkyMiles: Delta Partner Redemptions Soar Yet Again

I’m starting to think some Delta award trips should be called Delta punishment trips.

As Lucky at OMAAT notes, Delta SkyMiles partner redemptions increased.

Again.

Business class awards to Europe on Air France, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic start at 120,000 SkyMiles. Each way.

Remember the good ol’ days of late October 2020 when redemptions were “only” 95,000 SkyMiles each way? (And that was on a good day.) We found roundtrip fares higher than half a million SkyMiles.

Gross.

One would think that Delta — a company that mortgaged its own frequent flyer program — would want people to be excited about SkyMiles. How silly.

Best way to redeem Delta sky pesos is to redeem for Delta Gift cards at slightly less than 1 cent per mile. It is an inflation hedge against upcoming domestic devaluations. Gift cards do not devalue or expire.

Per Delta: “Delta Gift Cards may be used for travel on Delta Air Lines marketed flights, including those operated as Delta Connection and by Delta Air Lines codeshare partners with a Delta Air Lines flight number. They can be used on delta.com, at the airport, or through Reservations. They can also be used toward Delta Vacations packages that include air transportation when booking by phone with Delta Vacations.” So if there’s, say, an Air France flight sold by Delta (as, like, DL9185 or something), a Delta gift card should work just fine.

Too bad you can’t trade these awards on the stock market 🙂

I realize the Delta is another cash strapped airlines. But you would think they would be working to get loyal customers back and traveling. Instead the continue to reduce the value of their points earned while bumping up the points cost per ticket to ridiculous levels.
Now I have to wonders should I use my Amex Skymiles credit card burning up double or triple point, or use my Marriott Chase Visa which just gave me a good deal with my yearly free night and 2 nights using reduced point for a few days at Hilton Head.

I’m surprised that Amex went for this on top of the major devaluation a few months ago. The value of Delta cards has already been dropping steadily. This just makes an awful value even worse.

@Mike, @Chris, @Rene — Can we buy Delta Gift Cards again with SkyMiles? I know they discontinued this option a while back and cannot find that they have re-instituted it. If indeed one can buy Delta Gift Cards with SkyMiles, can you provide a link? THANKS!

Do notice the digital are MUCH cheaper than the “real” gift cards.
