We are getting emails from readers concerned about earning Delta status for the 2022 Medallion year. So let’s address that — and our general plan for 2021.
We don’t yet know if Delta will:
- extend status another year
- rollover everyone’s MQM again
- temporarily lower Medallion qualification thresholds
- any or all of the above
We’re proceeding as though Delta won’t. But if the mothership throws us all a bone, then it’ll be a wonderful surprise.
In addition to blogging about points and travel, both of us love earning (and burning!) points. And we love traveling. So we’re just as curious (and hopeful!) about what the year will bring — not simply for blog readership but also because we — like you — cherish this hobby and the amazing opportunities it affords to see the world.
We’re already looking at some mileage run possibilities for later in the year. We haven’t booked anything — but occasionally monitor prices, routes, and dates, and all that fun stuff. Trust us, we want elite status in 2022. And we’ll blog tips, trips, and more as they come up. In fact, 2021 might be a fun year of thinking outside the box when it comes to earning and redeeming points/miles.
Final Approach
Obviously, there are more pressing things in the world than earning elite status with a loyalty program.
But we need something to look forward to and keep us going.
We’re hopeful that travel will be safer and easier toward the latter part of 2021 — if not sooner. Let’s not assume Delta will extend our benefits for another year. Rather, prepare for how we can pounce on opportunities when they come up in a few months.
Most of all, have a safe, successful, happy, and healthy 2021.
Thank you,
Chris

Happy new year Chris. Delta has too big a gap between PM and DM. The incentive for me is to very easily attain another year of PM through simple $25,000 of Amex spend plus 75,000 rollover/Amex threshold MQMs and then focus on obtaining status on AA as DM is simply too far out of reach with $15,000 of MQDs or $250,000 of Amex spend. International mileage runs to Mexico City or elsewhere are too risky this year with covid testing entry requirements that frequently change. DL would be very smart to keep me and others loyal by lowering the MQD of $15,000 this year.
I agree!!
